He has 11 pts in 11 games in the MHL I believe. Is it concerning to anybody that his PPG ratio in the MHL hasn't gone up much with respect to last season? Shouldn't a guy who was labelled as a future 2nd line center be good enough to play in the KHL for Vityaz? Maybe he just needs to get stronger/quicker.

I read on Twitter (couldn't find the stat myself) that he is leading his MHL team in points despite missing 7 of their games.

He will need to get stonger... he has for sure lost weight since the end of last year. He was carrying some 'babyfat' to be at the ~190lbs he was, and is probably now more like 180-185lbs.

But as for speed... he stood out in the KHL in terms of skating when he was playing there. Really good first step. Just left guys in the dust.

TVA Sports' QMJHL insider/reporter says he'd bet on Rubtsov going to Chicoutimi. Does not specify when (This season? Next?).

Pure speculation from the reporter. Rubtsov has a 2 year deal, would imagine he honors it. His KHL team is doing better than anticipated no way he is going to get time in there this year. The VHL is an appropriate challenge for him, if he establishes himself there, KHL is not out of the question for next season. VHL is new mens league where prospects will develop, long gone are the days where 17/18 year olds are going to see a regular shift in the KHL.

Seems weird, it seems written like late 80's story where a guy would just defect during a NA tour. I would think he's spending the rest of the year in Russia and the next move will be figured out once the season is over. Does anyone have an example of a guy coming to the CHL mid-year from eastern Europe?

I didn't hear the comments on Rubtsov from Sportsnet. The game wasn't televised in the states. I heard from people who watched the Sportsnet broadcast that one analyst said there is a chance German could be in NA by the end of the season, and that "all parties" were negotiating that possibility. Who knows.. doesn't seem likely.

Yea that's weird.
Unless the Flyers are whispering things in his ear, I can't think of any reason he'd want to go to the QMJHL. He's in a good spot at the moment. Gets quality minutes in MHL while simultaneously gets to experience the 2nd highest level of competition in the world during his regular KHL call-ups. Gets to play in all those U20 exhibitions, which he'll be Russia's go-to player (after WJC) when '98 generation takes over.
Maybe the Flyers just want more control over his development.

Tkachev and Kitsyn a few years ago.

The writer said "he bets" I can also say that I "bet" he wont go. Neither is of any substance. Until German or his agent make some statement, all people will do is "bet" and who really cares about that, not good journalism.

When he was drafted he said that he definitely wanted to play in NA as soon as possible, and he gave the slightest hint that the Flyers tried to buy out his KHL contract.

I don't think it really makes sense for him to come over and play in the Q. Once he reports to Chicoutimi, he's locked out of the AHL until he's 20. He'll have to play at a juniors level until then unless he can make the Flyers. If Vityaz did allow him to be bought out, he might go straight to the AHL.

Not true. He wasn't drafted out of the CHL. If he really could go to the Q this year, he'd be eligible to join the AHL whenever.

I'm just not sure what sense it makes. It's very tough but doable for a young kid to get through the culture and language and hockey style gap with an offseason to prepare. To go mid-season would be very tough on him. It just doesn't make much sense to me.

Damn, the CBA is convoluted. Thanks for clarifying.

I don't see the point, either. I just don't get coming over mid-season to adapt to Francophone culture and to play at a level approximately equal to that in which he's playing just to scrap that and start fresh with the Flyers/Phantoms in a year or two.

If true, then I have to say that they never learn. They just never learn. Such a frustrating times for Russian hockey fans seeing a great prospect after another throwing away their careers.

Ever consider maybe there is reasoning why people hop ship to NA?

(read: it makes them more attractable to NHL teams as they can play from as soon as they are drafted, don't have to adjust as they come over, and have less of a risk of never even reporting)

He says there could be a positive conclusion for the Sags in the next few days.

The Russian team will be in Chicoutimi next week...seems pretty clear what the goal is.

What would be best is him being in the VHL... his speed, skill and smarts did not look out of place in the KHL, but he was getting bullied physically.

And in the MHL he is pretty dominant without really much of a team around him for Russkie Vityazi. The amount of golden chances he has set up that have been missed or flubbed has been silly. Not like last year when he has talent on both wings for Russian u18 side.

But (as Caser said on our board) something seems to be 'up' between Vityaz and Tver... last few years they used the VHL affiliate loads... and now there has not been that much in the way of guys being sent down or called up this year.

Maybe as when they have sent guys down Tver have been playing them in limited minutes in bottom six or scratching them. Has happened with Dostoinov, Abdullin, Dzhioshvili, Korolyov and Tsyganov so far this season.

So in light of that a loan to the CHL could help both Rubtsov and Vityaz.

Nothing against the KHL at all, but clearly Rubstov hasn't been ideally deployed for his own development this year, so getting into the CHL seems like a much better route in the short term.
