I forgot that every single player from the world juniors is a lock to become a top player.

I just don't see him being much more than an 8-12 minute a game guy if he doesn't develop some offense/foot speed.

Nobody is saying he's going to light the lamp and become a big time scorer.

Gauthier was ranked #21 by the ISS and guess where he went.. #21, yeah we missed out on Theodore but so did Detroit and other teams. **** happens there are 24-25 teams that missed out on Mantha.

If I were a Leafs fan, I'd be scared ****less about my team picking Crouse over Marner or Strome at #4 or 5.

Why? This is a team that's used their top ten picks on players like Nazem Kadri, Morgan Rielly, and William Nylander. The earliest we've ostensibly gone for "size over skill" was Gauthier at #21.

I am aware, I just don't think he has enough offensive upside to be an effective shutdown centerman in the league.

I see him as more of that Nate Thompson/Gregory Campbell/Kyle Chipchura caliber player who is strong defensively, can win faceoffs, and PK but doesn't really have the offensive upside/2 way play to effectively play a shutdown role.

No doubt that a lot of other scouts were probably wrong about Gauthier. There was considerable support on the Jets board to pick him at around #13 in the weeks / months before the draft. I'm glad the Jets didn't share the enthusiasm of many on our board. Too bad for the Leafs that they ended up with him, instead of a better available player at #21.

I noticed how nobody in this thread acknowledged your post about the comparison to Lowry. Lowry was who immediately came to mind as a comparison for Gauthier.

Lowry was touted as a big, defensive C who needed to work on his quickness.

The main differences are: 1) Lowry is very physical and aggressive. Leads the Jets in hits this season; 2) Lowry was actually a very good scorer in junior in his draft+2 season (was injured for most of his draft+1).

Lowry's skating has improved markedly since being drafted. He could still work a bit on quickness, but he moves very well for a 6'5" player.

By 24-25 teams missed out on Mantha it seems like you mean passed on? You do know that Mantha went before Gauthier, right? Also based on the rumours circulating around the draft at the time it appeared that Leaf management was high on Mantha and would've considered/possibly taken him in the draft if he had got to our pick.

It really show how obsessed Leaf fans AND non-Leaf fans are with this team that Gauthier is at the top of the prospects discussion board. If he were on any other team, we wouldn't hear anything about him.

i remember people comparing him to couturier, but couturier was a monster point producer in juniors.

It wouldn't matter either way whether Gauthier was producing or not. If he's got 90 points by now you'll hear "yeah well it's just junior stats which don't matter" or if he's not it's "I told you this guy was a bust, 4'th liner at best". This is HF in a nutshell.

In the best of cases, Danault (since he came on subject) could become IMO, kinda like Antoine Vermette (type of player, production, etc.) while I see Gauthier, if he works a lot on his skating, become like Radek Bonk.

I don't get all this complaining about a prospect. Gauthier is exactly what the leafs need. He is defensively responsible, can win face offs and kill penalties. Who cares if he wasn't a point per game player. Not every forward picked in the first round, will be a top 6 player in the NHL. Some exceed expectations, while others disappoint. No one here has a crystal ball, he could very well end up being a first line center.

I was agreeing with everything you said until you wrote that last sentence.
