How is this guy not getting more love in the rankings?

It's not like he is 5'9, obviously he's very thin, but I think it's fair to look at that as a good thing at this stage.

Probably because of the league he's playing in. I think the SHL and SuperElit get a lot more scouting than Allsvenskan.

Would it be more beneficial for him to be playing in SuperElit? At least in the Allsvenskan he's up against men. I would have thought that would help his draft stock

Rankings are a gradual process. Not a snapshot. This is how it should be, months and months building upon each other. If the prospect wasn't an "A" prospect heading into the season, you probably won't see lists making huge leaps and statements by putting Pettersson into top 10 spots.

However, don't be surprised, if he keeps it up, he'll see time into the top 10 at about after the WJC. He's already top 15 on FC, HP, and McK. There is still 7 months, he could move up a spot every month.

SHL would have likely been the most beneficial I think, to his draft stock at least. It may not be the most beneficial for his development though.

Some people love him, but he didn't wow people at the U-18's, which will hurt in certain rankings. Button due to his job can only really scout NA guys in person and relies on video and IIHF events. I would assume the same is true for Pronman. It will be interesting to see where he ends up on the first CSB euro list and Bob McKenzie's next list.

But he did a very good wjc 18. How many draft eligable 2017 players was better than him there? he outshine many high drafted 2016 players. I do not understand how anyone can hold his wjc 18 preformance against him.

He was fine, but he didn't really wow people there. I'd also say he should be compared against the other 17 year olds at the tournament. But as for more impressive 2017's there, I'd say Tolvanen, Yamamoto, and Mittelstadt were more impressive off the top of my head.

I'd say from a scouting perspective, that he didn't wow there like some others. Someone like Button tends to weight international events fairly heavily, and while I don't remember watching him at the 2015 Hlinka, I know he was held pointless. I don't think its being held against him, but I don't think it significantly raised his stock.

I would be glad if I were him. Who really wants to be picked in the top 10 just to go to some bad team thats going nowhere for a few years? Better for him to be picked late by a better team and get the years he needs in the SHL instead of going over and be rushed by the Oilers or something like that. Never understood the hype or importance of getting your "countrymen" drafted high. I rather see em going to a good club which hopefully leads to better development for them.

I may be crazy though

Three reasons why I think he isn't ranked higher:
1. Lanky frame. Will he be able to fill out? GM's for the worst teams are likely gone before Pettersson is ready, could take 3 years or more.
2. Foot speed. His first steps are not quick enough. I personally think he's shown improvement here and more overall strength could make a huge difference.
3. I think people who have watched him a lot likes him more than people with limited viewings. You need to watch Pettersson a lot to appreciate what an awfully smart player he is. He won't wow you every shift.

This is pretty fair. He's improved his foot speed a lot this summer though, i don't see it as an issue at all anymore, soon it's a strength.
The third point is pretty spot on, his hockey IQ is just so insanely high and you appreciate it more and more for each viewing.

If they where better, it was certainly not with much. I would say he was swedens best player after Andersson and sweden went to final.

Since Petterrsson is from Sundsvall and has come up with Timra, does he even have the ability to play for an SHL team? Not sure how affiliations/contractual obligations work for Swedes

He can go wherever he wants when his contract is done.
He's also from Ã…nge which is about 100km west of Sundsvall, semantics really but still :)

He signed a contract with a team that currently plays in Allsvenskan. He'll play in the SHL next season if his team gets promoted this year or if he signs an SHL contract with another team next summer. Allsvenskan is pretty much an extension of the SHL, sometimes players from the SHL teams can be loaned to Allsvenskan teams but you don't see players jump up and down between leagues like you do in the NHL/AHL.

I often have a hard time grasping the relegation and promotion concept of Euro sports.

I see, his EP page has him from Sundsvall, shouldn't have trusted them anyway. How long is his contract for?

I was more curious if Swedish teams have long-term affiliations with players (as we see in European football academies -> parent clubs), or if it is more of a free market system. That's where the prior question came from

No points today...but what a player. Starting to think he could be the 1st Swedish player picked in the draft, and thats no slight on Liljegren.

Like in football, the big clubs pick up all the local talent from the smaller clubs at a young age, and put them in their academies.

OT, but I find it funny that Europe, who has a much more socialist society than the US, has a much more capitalist sports' system. In Europe the top teams attract the top talent by default, and relegation ensures the bottom teams must spend to compete as well. Meanwhile in the US the losing teams are given top picks in an attempt to make the gap between them and the top teams lessen.

And, yes, I know this is because the US leagues believe they'll attract more fans/make more money this way, but I still find it weird.

Yeah, definitely the bolded part which is something i thought about. If he were able to play the way he's playing right now with a filled out body, he'd be in the conversation for top5.

Agree. We at Draftin Europe actually switched Pettersson ahead of Liljegren in September before the news about his mono came out, we've seen a couple of Liljegen games since his return from mono and nothing really changed our minds. Obviously still a long season, but so far we like Pettersson as the top Swede.

it really takes away the option for tanking though

edit: it also creates some excitement for fans at both ends of the standings, if your team is down in a relegation battle it is really nervous excitement but really great if your team manages to avoid relegation
