C Dylan Strome (2015, 3rd, ARI; traded to CHI) III

Well this is a great sign. I always use the AHL as a test before I can get overly hyped about someone coming out of jr. Now it being Strome, a top 5 pick who is highly skilled and hyped, this test doesn't usually apply because it doesn't need to.

How many big number players in jr come to the AHL and fizzle out?

I call it the Connor Brown test. Huge numbers in jr, but what if he came to the AHL and like many other prospects before him, he puts up 3 assists in 20 games and just isn't what we all hoped? Well Brown did quite well in the AHL and is now doing well in the NHL. Guys like Jeremy Bracco and Adam Brooks are the current dudes going through this test (not a great start).

But the point is, Strome is producing in the AHL, in pro hockey. Whether or not that was going to be a concern, well he's crushing that concern anyway. So its the first sigh of relief. I think it now bodes well for the next step.

Cant wait to see his haters eating crow. I like the fact the yotes are patient with him, giving him as much time to learn and grow.

Yeah, and it’s not like he’s “behind” necessarily. He’s still only 20, and has been excellent at every level as he does his due diligence to earn an NHL job. No reason to think that 5 years from now he won’t be earning his draft position. Can you imagine a Domi-Strome-Keller line?

I am not a big fan personally, always have seen a ryan kesler type 2c (which is still very good but I wouldnt have taken him 3rd) but I cant argue with the numbers he has been putting up, very impressive.
 
The equivalent of the Connor Brown test for me is the Pulkkinen test. I'll be patient to see if the AHL production can translate at the NHL level.

Good. Have liked him since his minor hockey days. He's not currently where I figured he'd be, but I still wish the best for him and am happy to hear if he's doing well. Is there a chance he'll get a call up anytime soon?

There's need for him on the roster but that'd be a huge blow to Tucson, who are the best AHL team right now. He will probably get left there, same as Merkley, until an injury makes it unavoidable.

How's his skating looking. That's been the biggest headache for me when it comes to Strome (carrying on many years!). Is it picking up? Is his skating looking more NHL-ready?
 
I was looking at his AHL numbers and was initially very impressed, but then I looked a bit deeper and he's getting a lot of his points on the PP.

5v5, he's tied for 51st overall in pts/game, 35th in pts/60. Not as impressive as I initially thought.

So what is the problem then? He is operating a strong PP, Coyotes would love to have a PP-magician.

I would for now, and reward him later this season if he continues his production. I have no doubt he can play in the NHL right now. But when he does get called up, you want him sticking and playing a key role. That time is coming soon. No worries. He's always scored at any level he has played.

If I were managment I'd reward his play, with the Leafs game. The lights are on, hometown and childhood team - Arizona has strung a few wins, so they are feeling good. Could do wonders for the kids confidence, just getting into that game.
 
This situation reminds me a bit of the Spezza situation. 20 year old Spezza was a better NHLer than Strome is today, but spending time in the AHL and doing very well was good for Spezza. Leave Strome there for now to have some success playing professional hockey and build his confidence.

Power play points don't count and no team has ever won anything from having an effective power play.

I know I always get so upset when my team scores on the power play. I always think, "why couldn't you save that goal for even strength when goals actually count!?!?!?" Nothing disappoints like a power play goal. Who needs em? ?!?

Yah. Special teams are so over rated. Especially in a league where 3 goals wins you most games. I mean even if your team scores two on the pp how does that help you. They may still have to score at ES to win.

He's a top scorer on one of the top teams in the AHL. That's not enough?
 
I like the idea of him playing against the leafs but otherwise nothing wrong with leaving him in the AHL. Keep him there all season long tbh, even with injuries.
