I would be interested in seeing what you think these same issues are that Strome and so many elite level Junior players have?

First 3 strides, shot in traffic, board play.

Lots of players like Strome have ELITE level numbers in minor pro and junior when they have open ice to work with against inferior opponents.

Thanks for the response.

I agree about his first steps. He is working on his stride though he will not likely ever be quick. He is not slow however (which some scoring stars in junior simply prove to be too slow at higher levels).

Strome is much maligned for that long wind up on his wrist shot...that is not the only shot in his arsenal though. He has a good one timer and snap shot too. I think he is smart enough that he will learn not to use that huge (slow) wind up.

Is weak on the boards? Maybe it would be nice given his size if were more physical but that is not his game. In my viewings I see him gain the puck a lot along the boards. Elite hands and hockey IQ allows him to steal pucks and anticipate plays. He does not have to be physically dominant. Plus, he is still growing and getting stronger. That will improve.

In a recent interview he stated he mostly is working on playing faster, moving the puck quicker to team mates rather than always slowing the game down.

Still, he has to prove himself at the NHL level. Until he does he will be doubted.

This is why people write him off: his issues in his game are the same issues so many elite level Junior and minor pro players have that have struggled to even string together 5 seasons in the NHL. He will have tons of rope as a 3rd overall pick but the people who are expecting 10 years of PPG play or even .85 PPG are insane
How many AHL games have you seen him play? Also, nobody thinks he's going to be a PPG NHL player.

Yes, he is a very long ways away. He has to play in the top 6 because there isn't any way he is going to have the skating or grinding ability to play in the bottom 6

You have no idea how long away he is so don't start posting like you do. I would bet he is on the verge of being called up if he keeps on producing like he has. Send Kempe down.

When I say long away what I obviously mean is long away from achieving the career that goes along with his draft ranking or the potential some people think he has. I don't mean literally long away from playing in the NHL regularly

Are you joking? All I have heard since he was 15 is how he is gonna rip up the NHL and be a 70-80 point guy.

4 point game tonight. 2nd in the AHL in points. Never seen a 20-year old put up such numbers in the AHL while getting suck flack. Regardless of whether he turns out or not.

Well it's usually because players drafted 3rd overall with a huge pedigree and profile like Strome aren't playing in the AHL hahahahahahahahahah

The impressive part of his production early on is he is 5 pts clear of the 2nd highest scorer, and 11 pts clear of the 3rd highest scorer on the team.

That's a fair point. But it doesn't take away from what he's doing. Would I prefer to see more from him 5 on 5? Yes. But who is going to complain about a PP specialist? I'd happily take a player like that.

And so would all the other AHL teams. No room on an NHL roster for a forward PP specialist. Heck there is barely room for a D man PP specialist, I think Shattenkirk is the only one left.

Just too much production and too much talent not to turn into something. My comp for him has always been a guy like Jason Allison, who is probably the prototype for the poor-skating, super-skilled playmaking center, and would be an excellent turnout, even if you discount the 95-point season as an outlier.

I'd still give up anything in the Canucks farm system other than Boeser or Pettersson for him, despite what some detractors may think. Though I don't think Arizona would deal him for anything less.

AZ is hoping at this stage that he will be a 1/2C who puts up 60 points a season.
When a 20 year old is leading the AHL in points, I find it hard to believe they would be happy if he only becomes a 2c.

If he's putting up 60 points a year? The number of C's who consistently do that is relatively small and Much of his slotting will depend on who has chemistry with Keller and/or if Keller eventually gets moved to C himself.

really seems like a Jason Spezza type ceiling is reasonable. Spezza lives with some of the same skating limitations and he's been good even in the post clutch-and-grab NHL

Damn, 24 points in 14 games. One point off the AHL scoring lead and most of the guys around him have played 4-5 more games. Kid is absolutely torching the AHL.
