Dude, that's not how the draft works. You draft projecting what the player will be at age 23-25. And that my friend is he projects to be better than anything we've seen in a long time...
He projects to be better than Mackinnon (2013), he projects to be better than either Ekbland or Reinhart (2014). and he'll be number 1 in 2015.

If he would have been available this past summer, he would have been the number 1 pick.

I know that. I'm saying if this was a hypothetical question and we were saying McDavid was 17-years old last season and not 15, but had the exact same play.

last summer he was 16 years old. if the NHL had a special exemption for elite players to enter the draft early like the ES rule in the CHL, McDavid at 16 would have been picked first. Mackinnon at 18 years old would have been the 2nd. I have no doubts about it.

If that were the case then no, his season last year would not have gotten him drafted first. This season is another matter, and its very possible Mcdavid will end up being best CHL player for this whole season. I think he'd be a lock to go first this coming draft just based on his skillset, even if he were exactly a year older than he is now.

Yes. I agree with this.

Do you understand what I meant though? I interpreted the question as if McDavid was 17-years old but had the season he had last year. So pretty much a far weaker and smaller player than average who produced at PPG but has insane IQ & talent.

I can't imagine any kind of scenario whereby a 17 year old McDavid is not infinitely better than the 15/16 year old McDavid. The guy has mad skills. And I really don't get what you're driving at... because if a 17 year old draft eligible player in the OHL is averaging a PPG or a little above, there's really not that much hype around him or that much attention given to him, just another draft eligible player that looks like a decent pick. But that's not what he is. He's a lot more than that.

If I understand you correctly then no, he would not have been drafted first because 17yo Mackinnon > 15yo McDavid. It is not really something to spend much thought on, I mean lots of average 17 year olds are better than future stars were at 15...

EDIT: I can't really think of any cases where a 15 year old has been currently better than the projected 1st overall 17-18yo. Maybe Gretzky or Mario?

Clearly we're having a lack of communication. Just ignore me.

5 goals, 25 assists, 17 games. Kid's not bad.

Can't believe he still has another year in the O, he's going to wreak havoc next year.

Can't wait until he comes to the show.

He's definitely more of a pass first guy but he has no trouble scoring. Exhibit A: U18s. My guess is that his stats will round out by the end of the year and he'll have plenty of goals.

When I see highlights I see him in an open lane to shoot and he'll make a backhand pass to a teammate nobody is aware of. It's coming too easy for him, so he tries to get his teammates goals it seems.

For those who watch him more often, is his lack of goals a concern at all?

He's not a guy who will go into traffic as often as a guy like crosby, and he doesn't have the same boxy build, but the kid kid is still a great goalscorer and gets to the net quite easily. But he's definitely more of a perimeter player at this point in his development, probably due to his stature.

His offensive playing style is a blend of a few guys - sees the ice like a Crosby, puck skills and strength/balance like a Giroux, and skates like a Stamkos. If McDavid can get to 195+ lbs at 6' he's going to become a very difficult player to play against. I project him to be a perennial 30+g 100+ point guy in his prime, with a few seasons exceeding 110 pts.

Before Crosby scored 50 in the Nhl I remember there being threads on message boards saying "who is the next 50 goal scorer?" and no one was saying Crosby. A lot of people said Gaborik if I remember correctly.

Just because some has a pass first mentality doesn't mean they won't be a great goal scorer.

Crosby improved his goal-scoring in an off-season, Tavares improved his goal-scoring in an off-season. I see no reason to negate that McDavid will do so too. These elite-level players always find ways to improve the weak points of their games (although goal-scoring really isn't a weakness for McDavid, he's proven himself to be a good goal-scorer at the junior level).

McDavid hasn't scored a goal in his last seven games. Yet, he has 13 assists, including three more tonight.

He's been dealing with a few nagging injuries since the season started... improved a little over the past 6 weeks, but a few have reoccurred. Let's hope he's back at it soon.

The kid is a gamer.

Crosby scored what, 39 goals in his rookie season? People always underrated his goal scoring ability because his incredible playmaking skills kind of overshadowed it, but name anyone but Crosby scoring 39 goals at 18 years old in the NHL and he'd be considered an insane goal scorer.

It didn't come out of nowhere...

I hope he gets to play somewhere with some other elite talent up-front. Don't like seeing forwards going somewhere with no-one to play on a line with.

If he delivers like we expect him to, but is on his own, I'd expect another top line guy to show up either through the draft or through free agency quite quickly.
