Crosby is a grinder. He is the best player in the world because he is just as skilled as a Datsyuk or McDavid or whoever else, except he doesn't try to finesse his way. He dominates board battles, skates into corners at top speed, takes the body, fishes pucks out from behind the net. He is relentless and physical.

Crosby's stickhandling, shooting and passing skills are obviously at a very high level but there are guys in the league that can match it. What separates Crosby from the rest is his ability to play at a higher tempo than everyone else. I think it's basically impossible to know if McDavid has that before he plays in the NHL, either way he's going to be one hell of a player.

Crosby's passing is bar none in the NHL, and I think his hand-eye is far and away the best in the league. No one, absolutely no one, can redirect pucks like he can. It's insane.

What makes Crosby Crosby is how ridiculously smart of a player he is combined with just being a great athlete. His core and lower body strength is fantastic, his skating is explosive, and he's the smartest player this league has seen in 20 years.

Oh yeah and that nasty backhand.

Precisely this.

You can count the amount of star players that are willing to play the grind game on one hand, and Crosby is one of them.

He isn't the most spectacular because he gets things done in a practical way, rather than a flashy way.

That's why he has been the most effective offensive player in the league for a while now, coupled with great two-way play.

People are just so eager to see the next one that they'll put any above average 1st overall talents on Crosby's level... Another thing to consider is how effortless Crosby's transition from the CHL to the NHL as a 18 years old went. 102 points, followed by 120 points as a teenager is insane. Look at Tavares and his insane numbers in the OHL back then and how he transitioned to the big league. The first years were tough, and even though he turned a corner recently, he's still hardly one of the league's top player. Stamkos had lesser stats in junior and look how he is today.

So beyond junior records, there's the adaptation factor to take into consideration.

Good post. One thing I'd add is the the CHL in 04-05 was populated by the strongest draft class in recent memory all playing as overagers, because there was no NHL hockey that season. CHL now just has guys who aren't NHL ready, basically. And there's been no recent draft that was 30 deep in players with star potential, let alone guys from such a class still in the CHL at 19.

Almost stopped reading there but I'm glad I didn't. :handclap:

would mcdavid go first in the upcoming draft? some scouts said he would have gone 1st in 2013 or at the least top 5...

He doesn't have to necessarily outplay 2014 draft eligibles to be taken no. 1.

but thus far he has outplayed everyone in 2014 draft. i have no doubt he would go first overall in 2014 and most likely in 2013. he is just so damn good. in a different tier than MacKinnon and whole another than Reinhart or Ekblad.

Let me get this straight. You guys would pick Nathan Mc Kinnon over McDavid?

If someone said to the Avs you can take the 18 year old Mc Kinnon or the 16 year old Mc David and wait 2 years to play him..............they still take Mc Kinnon?

no.

If Mario Lemiuex had been eligible to be drafted at 14 , he would have gon 1st even though he couldnt play in the NHL for 4 years.

Gretzky would have been drafted at age 9

Gretzky wasn't even drafted 1st overall in Junior, let's not kid ourselves.

Gretzky scored 378 goals when he was 9 years old. I draft him with a 2nd or 3rd round pick then and there.

I doubt many will think I am kidding.

In terms of potential, McDavid could be better than 87 offensively. You have to remember that when Corsby was 16 he was already one of the strongest guys in the CHL from the waist down, which is what enabled him to dominate so early on. Tavares was also very far along in his physical development. McDavid is significantly less mature than either of those 2 at 16. As he starts to fill out his frame I think his point totals (specifically goals) will take off. Just think that he is scoring most of his points from the perimeter - but where did Sid and Tavares score most of their points?

I'm not trying to look at this as a fan, but as a GM who could lose job security if he messes this up. Then on top of that, you have to consider the other options McKinnon, Barkov, and Jones etc. A 16 year old would have to be extremely phenomenal to go first in this draft.

Do you guys mean would McDavid go 1st in the draft if he was of draft eligible age? Or do you mean would he go 1st overall as a 16 year old and the team would have to wait 2 years for him to develop?

If this was the case, and he was draft eligible last year he wouldn't have gone #1. This year, 1 draft year early, I would think he would go first overall. He's only a few months younger than the youngest player will be in this draft anyways with his early birthday.

Yes. He'd go 1st overall 2013 (16 yrs) 2014 (17 yrs) and 2015. He's that good.

If last year he was draft eligible he would not have gone 1st. He would have likely gone towards the end of the top 10 based on his skill-set though. He was ~PPG, didn't get any Team Canada consideration, was a little undersized, etc...

Obviously it was an extraordinary season for a guy his age, but if he was 17-years old and draft eligible he wouldn't have gone 1st overall.

If his age was taken into consideration however he would've gone 1st overall. The same would have applied for Tavares every single post-Crosby draft leading up to his. I also think MacKinnon would have gone ahead of Yakupov (again, if age is taken into consideration).

Well it's a good thing you're talking about the one prospect in hockey that fits that description.

Dude, that's not how the draft works. You draft projecting what the player will be at age 23-25. And that my friend is he projects to be better than anything we've seen in a long time...
He projects to be better than Mackinnon (2013), he projects to be better than either Ekbland or Reinhart (2014). and he'll be number 1 in 2015.

If he would have been available this past summer, he would have been the number 1 pick.
