Stylistically he can definitely be the most exciting player in the world, even if he doesn't end up quite as good as Crosby.
I find this a strange comment, to me he plays a pretty similar style to Crosby, but not quite as skilled, or as naturally strong on the puck. Stylistically I see them both as relentless puck hounds with very high end skill in all regards, elite hockey IQ, but not a tonne of flash despite their massive talent. He really does not play a flashier game than Crosby, he's a puck possession guy who's good at everything and who always makes the right moves. Basically Crosby, but not as good, to me that is not more exciting.
Also, re: all the Crosby comparisons, I think people are forgetting just how good Crosby was as a prospect. McDavid looks outstanding, one of the best prospects since Crosby, I love watching him and can't wait to see him in the NHL. Still, have people already forgot how ****ing amazing Sid was at the same age?
CHL rookie years:
Crosby: in 03/04, Crosby's rookie season in the Q, he lead the entire CHL in scoring. He put up 135 points in 59 games, and was the QMJHL MVP. Corey Locke (OHL) was 2nd in the CHL in scoring, well behind Crosby with 118 points in 65 games. Crosby was dominant to a simply insane degree for such a young player.
McDavid: last year McDavid was a CHL rookie, and was a bit younger than Crosby was in his rookie season, but not way younger or anything (5 months younger). He was a good player, but was not even close to the best player in the OHL, nevermind the CHL. He put up 66 points in 60 games, good for 30th in the OHL in scoring, and 2nd on his own team. In the CHL overall he was tied for 103rd in scoring. He was a good player, he definitely had an impressive rookie season, but come on, Crosby was insanely better in his rookie season, and was just 5 months older.
2nd CHL seasons:
Crosby: in 04/05, Crosby's 2nd year in the Q, he was even more dominant. He put up a ridiculous 168 points in 62 games, the most in the CHL by an absolutely massive margin. Corey Perry (OHL) was 2nd, with 130 points in 60 games, and Perry himself was way ahead of 3rd place (3rd and 4th were actually Crosby's linemates, who were mediocre players getting absolutely carried by Sid).
McDavid: so far he's got 30 points in 17 games, which places him 5th in the OHL in scoring, and 2nd on his own team (6 points behind Connor Brown). In the CHL as a whole he's 13th in scoring. He's one of the best players in the CHL, but Crosby was the best player in the league as a rookie, and the best in the league by an absolutely massive margin in his 2nd year, McDavid is really not that close at all.
If you took Crosby at the same age, made him a weaker on the puck, and not quite as skilled in general, you'd have McDavid. Again, that is not an insult to McDavid. He's a completely elite prospect, but it's borderline insane for people to say that he's as good (or better!) than Crosby at the same age, he's WAY below where Crosby was. I personally think Crosby is the best prospect the league has seen in the last 20 drafts (since Lemieux in 1984). McDavid is great, but I wouldn't say he's clearly better than other recent #1s like Tavares, Hall, MacKinnon, etc., and none of these guys were particularly close to Crosby as prospects.
