And to think you forgot Dylan Strome is also in that draft, currently on the same team as McDavid. Although he's having a down rookie campaign, I expect him to be top 5-10 in his draft.

I don't think that a rookie campaign can be "down". It's just part of the learning curve.

is his defensive game still nonexistant?

Defensive game from elite players in junior is the most overrated thing out there. Players like McDavid have the puck almost the entire time they are on the ice. He will learn the defensive game as he plays against competition where he doesn't have the puck all the time. He has the tools that being a good defensive player shouldn't be too tough for him if he is committed to it.

well yes because when he is on the ice the puck is in the offensive for 95% of the time. so essentially it is non-existent.

it's a common fallacy with most elite players that they have no defensive game - because in junior they literally don't.

perfect example was morgan rielly last season. people constantly questioned his defensive abilities because he literally played no defense. any time the puck got chipped into his zone he would retrieve, make a single tight turn to ditch for the forechecker, and be out of the zone in seconds. that was the extent of his "defensive game".

Yet the puck was in Rielly's end enough for him to be -8, how could that be if he was hardly in his own zone like you say? I know the team really sucked, not blaming Rielly for being a minus player, just saying it didn't actually go down anything close to that, Rielly would have spent plenty of time playing actual defense.

McDavid's defensive game isn't there yet but it will come. He's very young and spent his first year in the OHL on an awful team, it's tough to hone your own defensive game when the four guys you're on the ice are lost defensively too. It will come over time in the pros, like Crosby's has.

As if plus/minus was an actual stat that has any meaning too it

Read the paragraph I bolded and tell me how it's possible that Rielly was a minus player if it went down anything close to that. I don't believe plus/minus is a very telling stat, but it's telling enough that Rielly's junior career wasn't exactly as maplehawk described it.

you realize you're talking about a player on a team that was cumulatively like -300 right? rielly had far and away the best +/- of any d-man on that team.

your interpretation of that stat is incredibly flawed. anyone who actually watched him play knows that what i said is primarily true. he played very little time in his own end.

I though it was pretty obvious he was exaggerating, tho his point still remains valid

McDavid with 2 assists already, meaning his MULTIPOINT game streak hits 8 games, (total point streak is at 10 games)

Awesome job for McDavid.

When people said before the season started he might lead the OHL in scoring, I was pretty confident that wouldn't be the case. That is one prediction I would love nothing more than to say I was wrong about

I do wish he had more of a shoot 1st. mentality.

Anyway, Subway Super Series coming up.....does he get 2 games or just 1 to prove he belongs with the big boys at Xmas?

He has to start scoring. I understand that shot may be not his strongest part of his game, but if you don't even shoot, you won't improve it... Goal scoring > Play making.

And yet, in the last three tournaments he's played in, he's been the leading goal scorer in two of them and tied for third in the other.
He led the U18's as a double underager, was third at the U17's as an underager (without making it into the medal rounds), and set the OHL Cup record for goals as an underager.

Just like MacKinnon and his torrid goal scoring pace to start last season, McDavid's goal/assist ratio will level out as the season goes on.

Sounds like he's just got the puck all the time....which kinda trumps everthing.
