Gretzky wasn't mentored by a superstar though, he was surrounded by young talent. McDavid is going into a similar situation now.

I think he can still get advice from Hall and Nuge since they've gone through a similar path.

Maybe that becomes Messier's literal job since "consultant" seems like Katz paying him to play Jenga

I really don't think he's going to need much "mentoring" this kid is mature beyond his years, the way he conducts himself off the ice is that of a true professional. He's got an excellent support system between his family, trainers, agent.

Doesn't need a superstar mentor. Hendricks is a great leader and role model for how to act and carry yourself. Needs sheltering tho, rnh can provide that

Who should mentor McDavid? Crosby had Lemieux. The Oilers don't have any superstar / former superstar vets that would be able to mentor him. Gretzky would be amazing but he doesn't even live in Edmonton.

His agent is Bobby Orr. I'm sure he could learn a thing or two from him.

I don't agree that he needs sheltering. He's probably already a top 10 center in the NHL. He's a pretty hard worker and excellent skater, I think he'll be just fine in his own end. Probably already compares favorably to guys like Seguin.

If Sean Monahan can center a top line on a playoff team, I see no reason why McDavid shouldn't be able to do the same.

I think he could play #1C soon, but developmentally it would be better to be sheltered. From what I saw from RNH in the final 40 games he is able to excel as a 1C, so its not hurting the Oilers to play RNH as a 1c playing the toughest minutes and allowing McDavid to eat up softer minutes with Hall as a winger. But then again McDavid could explode and be heads and tails above RNH from the get go and force himself into 1c very soon

Its almost scary to me to envision RNH in a sheltered 2c role in a year when McDavid becomes 1c

I just want Mcdavid to be sheltered a bit and learn a 200 foot game. I also feel his offensive skills will need to be tinkered a bit in the NHL 9cant beat D 1 on 1 as easily)

Everything you read about McDavid leads one to believe he is going to be the one showing the rest of our "kids" how to be a player.

Sounds about as focused on success as a kid could be.

Even scarier is that Draisaitl may well could be better than RNH, pushing him to 3C or the Drai to wing.

With smart acqusitions at this draft, 1 or 2 good trades in the future, as well as development of Platzer/Slepyshev etc, the Oilers could truely roll a monster 3 line team up front with McDavid/LD/RNH anchoring the middle and Hall/Eberle/Yak/Lander/BP and some other wingers as the wingers

Apparently he is going to live with Ference and his
Family.

I guess better him than Hall and Eberle. At least we know McDavid will be in shape for camp.

Can they just buy Ference out and give McDavid his house?

well that kills the buyout/dump Ference train.

I swear Nikitin is more useful, and for only 1 more season

Well it was Monahan's second season, and in his rookie year he was sheltered significantly..

The maturity that Mcdavid has already shown leads me to believe that you won't see him out at the bars like most young players. This is a very driven individual that knows what it takes to be the best.

I also get this feeling. Crosby was never out much but I think McDavid has a more outgoing personality than Sid.

Agreed.

Superstar athletes are generally able to become superstars by combining elite talent with hard work.
One in a generation athletes become generation by combining elite talent, hard work, and absolute dedication to success.

McDavid has that dedication, and the talent and the drive to be successful. Its not surprising that he did academically well in school. The drive he has means he would be successful no matter what he did in life.

I truly believe that dedication and drive and commitment to all aspects of life is what makes a generation player different from just regular "superstars"
