Very quiet game tonight other than an absolutely filthy move undressing 2 oil kings dmen. He's had so little play time due to being on the penalty kill most of the game from what I can tell.

They have him on the point in the power play but having another teammate carry the puck on the powerplay but they cant establish zone time to save their lives.

Still a period left. Lots can change.

Statistically, this guy is very close to McDavid in terms of how he is measures up vs. his peers at the same stage of their development.

Is there anything from a prospect perspective that places him behind McDavid? I.e. his dominance at age 16 won't translate as well in the NHL like McDavid's speed has.

It’s purely his height. If the kid was doing the exact same things as he is currently but he was 6’0, he’d be widely considered the next “next one.”

My take away form last night. Dude needs to keep developing but if I were him id just bury the puck every chance I got. He's trying really hard to incorporate the whole team and distribute when he should be wiring it. None of his team other than some greasy door step goals can finish.

Their coach should be having him be the zone entry on the power play instead of his teammate as they couldn't establish any pressure.

Park someone infront all game and just let Connor rip it all game long, get people there to put in rebounds.

It's a shame they wont trade him as it would be nice to see him in playoffs or memorial cup.

He usually is the one who does pp zone entries and usually shoots from everywhere. With Guhle, Sourdif, and Guenther matched against him at all times last night he never really had any time and space so his only option was to look for teammates.

His numbers are pretty in-line with 16-year-old Stamkos and behind Tavares. I don't really get why McDavid's 16-year-old numbers are used as the only comparable.

Tavares shouldn't really be a comparable either. He was alreay a man at 16. Bedard is still a chubby cheeked boy. Lots of maturing left for him.

I wouldn't say he was a man at 16. And I think how old a player looks sometimes gets blown out of proportion. It's not like JT looked like Ekblad at 16. I remember people losing their minds because of how developed Matthews looked at 18 compared to someone like Laine.

There's a big difference between a chubby cheeked 16 year old who has peach fuzz and a guy (like JT) who at sixteen had his man strenght and was shaving. Ekblad used a straight razor at 12.
Matthews is in a different level. Generational talent. Bedard might grow into a Dionne level guy.

Matthews is also the best taller player since prime Thornton IMO. Since he, Getzlaf, Spezza, Benn (for a few years) were at the top of their game, there really haven't been exceptionally talented forwards with size.

They were not in-line with the other top scorers of the O as a 16 year old. Bedard's are.

We all know that Tavares' stock went down, if it was ever as high as the "Next One", by his draft year.

Bedard seems to be the next "Next One" but some don't see him on McDavid's tier as a 16 year old.

Early in his career, Spezza did not play like a tall/big man. As a Leaf fan, it amazes / amuses me how at 36+(?) he's become a skill+grit player.

The WHL doesn't really have a Tavares or Patrick Kane in it at the moment. If you think the top players in the WHL of 2021-22 are comparable to the top players in the OHL in 2006-07 I think you are reaching. And, Tavares stock didn't significantly do down. Entering their 17 year old season, many scouts preferred Stamkos to Tavares. There is an article by Bob McKenzie at the time saying 7 out of 10 scouts preferred Stamkos if they were in the same draft class.

You don't think Bedard could be as good as Kane or Tavares?

Stamkos was outside the Top Ten in scoring and PPG as a 16 year old and Top 5 as a 17 year old. Bedard is #2 in PPG in the W as a younger 16 year old.

His best comparable as a 16 year old is McDavid.

And Tavares was never thought of a "Next One" like Lindros, Crosby and McDavid.

He had at minimum 4 times where I noticed, at the hash marks, he chose to pass it rather than use a defender as a screen.

Look at who was in front of him. The list is dominated by Kane and Tavares linemates. Two guys who went 1OA in their respective drafts. And, you were the one saying Tavares would have been thought of as the next one if he continued improving from that season. I'm saying even after that Stamkos was viewed as ahead by a decent amount of scouts. And, I believe Bedard is 6th in points per game of players who have played over 20 games. And, Stamkos was 5th in points per game at 17 while second in the OHL in goals. But, don't let facts get in your way.

McDavid’s numbers are the most relevant. They are the most recent and their paths are the most similar - exceptional status, dominant u-18’s as 15 year old, world juniors at 16, etc.
