C Connor Bedard (2023, 1st, CHI) Part 6

Impossible to make a statement like this after what, 6 games?
Call me bias, however watching McDavids first 10 games, just the sheer ability he displayed shift by shift is simply above Bedards. Points aside. Bedard looks really nimble and has some insane stick work and very good shot. McDavid just seemed more well put together, stronger on his feet, much faster and agile, much better passer, forechecked better, more puck control and faster hands, held onto the puck longer.

Also McDavid just seemed more intense every shift. Less nervous.

He did have a learning curve like all rookies, I don't think it was until his first game back from the injury that he really looked like current McDavid. I don't think Bedard will be as good as McDavid, but I also think it's silly to jump to conclusions after 7 games.

McDavid is nervous ordering pizza (online, not even over the phone).

At this rate it will be hard him to match Brinksy's (19 yrs old) rookie season for the Hawks

28 goals, 52 points in 82 games, He did those numbers while playing mostly
in 4th line and 3rd line role with limited pp1 and top 6 time.

Bad team, bad linemates? for Connor's rookie season... sure absolutely but,
imagine playing 12-15 minutes most nights with players who can't even skate, pass, nor read the play
then ask again...
DeBrincat never played 4th line minutes.

Yeah some real bums he played with huh. You don't need to just LIE.

Not sure how you can get this wrong so consistently. That was Debrincat's 20-year old season. He is born in 1997, while 18-year old rookies that year were born in 1999. Debrincat was not eligible to play in the World Juniors in that season; meanwhile, Bedard is eligible for the next two years. Its quite the difference.

Nice goal from Bedard in the first period tonight. He scored a beauty last game too that got called back from that ridiculous offside challenge that had zero bearing on the actual play.

He's learning and it is already showing from the first couple games to these last couple games. There are less "junior moves" in the last few games - thing he could do in the WHL last season that gets shut down in the NHL. He's playing a little firmer against physical play too. In general, he seems to be getting more comfortable with the size and speed of the NHL. Still got a ways to go but the progress is noticeable.

Agreed. And I think by around Game 20 he is going to be at a PPG pace, will have a more complete game, and will be the clear Calder frontrunner.

Another sick snipe for Bedard tonight, as he nets his 4th of the season. Still two periods to play.

Bedard is rolling now. Goals in 3 games in a row (though the first was called back in that BS offside).

It's pretty special to watch the early days for these kind of players. Like David Attenborough should be commentating over 4k slow motion footage, ending in the triumphant acquisition of the Calder pine nut for the young Bedard.
That’s cool and all, but all I can think of when I watch is how unbelievably bad the team around him is. It’s nuts that the Hawks acquired zero free agents of even approaching-average skill for Bedard to play with - they could have overpaid on extremely short term deals for some FAs looking to cash out and set themselves up for next year by playing with 98, without altering the trajectory of the team. It’s not like they had any quality youth banging on the door that would have been impeded by such acquisitions.

with Hall out I don't think they have a single other forward who's even a 2nd line calibre player at this point. and how many NHL calibre defensemen do they have? Seth Jones, maybe Connor Murphy and Korchinksi if he was 3 years older?

Hall is a 3rd liner at this point in his career

Vlasic has been the top defenseman for the team so far, but he's currently out
