C Connor Bedard (2023, 1st, CHI) Part 6

Crosby has Lemieux, Gonchar, Recchi, LeClair, Palffy, and a whole host of solid veterans on that team. He was well insulated even if they were past their primes.

Crosby and Ovechkin scored almost twice as many points as the second highest scoring player on their team.

While Bedard is outscored by 38-year-old Corey Perry and Tyler Johnson.

5 games against really good teams

Anyone who expected Bedard to come in and score like Crosby and Ovechkin in their rookie season were simply setting themselves up for disappointment.

Watched the entire game. Now this was his worst game of his young season.
Looked dead tired, had no legs. - the entire game

Made 2 good plays, other than that, many mistakes, got hit again too often.
- one double tally hit

That last shift of his, in the last minute of the game, holy hell it was bad,
like i said above, dead tired, he was barely moving at the end.
He was going up against Toews/Makar all night, not easy for an 18 year old. He had no room out there at all.

This.

Bedard might be as talented as Crosby/Ovechkin, but he is not at their level physically. Crosby was the human fire hydrant and Ovechkin was a man-child from day 1.

That's not to say Bedard can't reach their level, but me thinks it will take a little more development and time on his part.

This is what it all boils down to. This kid was just insanely overhyped. People legitimately thought he'd walk in and put up 100 points as a rookie. Incredible prospect, has had a great start to the year, but he has a long way to go to be compared to elite all time players like McDavid, Ovi, Crosby. Was silly to put him in that company before he ever stepped on NHL ice. He definitely deserved insane hype, but many took it several steps too far, and have put some really unfair expectations and pressure on the kid.

I think making any statement after 5 games on being overhyped or underhyped is also silly.

He scored at levels in the CHL matched only recently by McDavid and Crosby. The hype was warranted. Whether he becomes that good, time will tell. You certainly aren't going to tell after 5 games.

The stats are easily findable (naturalstattrick) but let's be real they're not of any value to you since you've already made up your mind about Bedard as a player.
I just watched the games and he's playing like he did in the CHL.

^^ GREAT POST !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ^^

Spot on. Well said. He has the talent but he is NOT there physically.

If I was the Blackhawks, I'd find a way to send him to the AHL - let him get his confidence back. Then I'd send him to the WJR's. I'd also get him a physical trainer and get some meat on them bones.

You're out of your mind. He leads the NHL in scoring chances five on five. He doesn't need confidence, he needs even replacement level talent around him. He doesn't belong anywhere near the AHL, let alone the World Juniors; that's nonsensical. Also, you don't think a kid at Bedard's level hasn't had a physical trainer since like 13-14 years old?

1. He can't go to the AHL.
2. He's not going to the WJC

Crosby was playing with a better group of forwards than Bedard or Ovechkin in his rookie year
Lemieux
Palffy
Recchi
Leclair
Plus they had Gonchar on defense.

Washington easily had the worst group of players to accompany Ovechkin.
There was an interview with Ovechkin in 2005/2006 where he says something to the effect of, "they say Crosby has great linemates so to compare our season is unfair, but I have Chris Clark and Jeff Halpern and Dainus Zubrus!" almost sorta feeding into the narrative - though not sure if he was trying to be ironic/sarcastic on purpose.

I don’t know what some people are talking about, he’s outscored McDavid at the same age the same number of games into his career so far (actually a younger age) and looks way better than McDavid looked. He plays a more zoomer game, more cutting edge more TikTok dangles. McDavid though being a zoomer himself plays a boring humble millennial game, then there’s also the fact McDavid is beta and has no rizz. Bedard will be better than him and I’ll tell you that for free

Does he really though? High danger or low danger?

Bedard has more points 5 games in than McDavid did, and on an even worse roster than the 15-16 Oilers.

So I guess all those shitting on Bedard also don't view McDavid as generational.
Their ice time thou...

Connor McDavid : avg ice time through 5 first games 18 minutes
Connor Bedard : avg ice time through first 5 games 21 minutes

in game 6 McDavid got 15:36 ice time, then 17:30, then 18:54
in game 9 McDavid got above 20, when he got 22:19.

Bedard's playing more because there isn't anyone else on the Hawks. There was a shit ton more support with that Oilers squad.

But even if you want to call it all a wash between him and McDavid (handful of games into his career), then you'd have to admit that he's pacing about as well as the current best player in the world did.
