F Brendan Leipsic - Portland Winterhawks

Hey gang,

Just wondering, from those who see him play regularly, what you think of this guy? Was advertised as a sparkplug with some offensive pop when the Predators drafted him in the 4th round last year, now I see that he's 4th in the entire WHL with 20g/25a in in 26 games this season

What are his longterm prospects? Good 3rd liner who can potentially pot 15-20 goals in the NHL?

How does this argument need to die? Majority of "small" players never make the NHL, am I wrong to think otherwise? What is so different about Leipsic?

I for one do not get excited about high scoring, high energy, undersized junior players, they come a dime a dozen. They can play that way against kids, but not men.

You mean like Marchand, Andrew Shaw, Tyler Kennedy, Darren Helm, Nathan Gerbe, Ryan Callahan and Matt Read? Yeah, I heard those kind of guys rarely make an impact...

After the third round, 75% or more of your picks are gonna bust, I like guys with high motors and insane compete levels instead of big coke machines with a lack of hockey sense or guys that can't skate. Guys that always buzz around the puck, can drive possession, and scratch and claw to find any way they can impact a game are keepers for me. Sure he might not turn out, most prospects won't, but I will usually take that kind of guy third round and later over a "project" big guy with "upside."

Nashville has made good on their bets and unearthed real legit NHL players out of Canadian junior in the past few years with Bourque and Halischuk who have similar types of attributes. Undersized and all over the ice all the time.

As do most players that are drafted. It being used as reason for only small players not making it is just foolish.

Every player has obstacles they have to overcome. Big players get it easy in the smaller leagues and often struggle against bigger players.

My point is the idea that small players struggle to make isn't anymore of a statistic than big players...

Most players don't make the NHL.

I asked Brent Peterson (who I believe is still a part owner of the Winterhawks) at the Preds' meet the team party about Leipsic (and seth Jones, to a lesser extent).

He said the organization obviously loves him and almost took him where they took Colton Scissons in the second round, and were thrilled he was still available. Said that if he was comparing him to a current NHL player, Brad Marchand was a good comparison.

He won't score at an elite level in the NHL, but he might put up 20 goals while being a terror to play against.

It seems like the success has gotten to Portlands heads a little. They are all playing me first hockey, especially Leipsic and Rattie. Leipsic tried to dangle through the whole team numerous times instead of making a simple pass to an open teammate. He can do it on occasion, but not against a good team like Tri-City.

I have only seen Leipsic about 3 times, and his numbers dont show it, but I think he gets a little case of tunnel vision.

I think he's gotten into that habit from about the point where players left for World Juniors. Before that, there was a stretch of a month where the team had gelled in ridiculous fashion. Is that attainable again? Maybe. I do think the Hawks were gearing up more for tonight against Edmonton.

He is unreal. Saw him play the other night and he was entertaining, dominated on the scoresheet and got almost every player on the opponent off their game. PERFECT type of player to have on your team. Unreal this year and will be even better next year. Portland always finds great players. Him and Petan will light up the league BIGTIME next year

Oh stop it with the size argument, Martin St. Louis happily counters that.

If you have the drive/motivation combined with skill, everyone has the same chance.

So... Are people who are 6'0+ that play hockey by coincidence usually more naturally skilled and harder workers? Because the average height of a player in the NHL is above average over the regular population. The number of successful juniors who are average or shorter height (especially shorter, think 5'6-5'8) that are successful in the NHL is a much lower percentage than the number of successful juniors who are above average height that are successful in the NHL.

Is this just a freak statistical coincidence? I'm curious what your thoughts are. But I need a better argument, because while we're on telling people their arguments are wrong, the argument that St. Louis is good therefore size is not an obstacle for anyone or that Chara is good therefore being freakishly tall isn't a disadvantage for anyone is not valid. I want something based on more than one individual.

EDIT: I am not saying that he won't do well at the NHL level or not, just that I haven't seen large evidence suggesting that the size argument is make-belief nonsense.

He's the type of guy you probably want to see get one or two years in the AHL. So I'd say he'll get a cup of coffee at some point next year and make a decent push for the roster in 14/15 should everything go well for him.

Also, I believe Leipsic played the entire year on the wing.

Agreed. FWIW, the Predators have always had him listed as a LW on their site and in publications. They do not see him as a center moving forward.

Yeah he plays LW in Portland, his line is Leipsic-Petan-Rattie

This guy has put up crazy numbers the last few years with Portland but doesn't get talked about much. Is there any major reasons to not consider him a very good prospect at this point (besides a size disadvantage)?

I'd like to know as well. Don't get to see very much of him, besides seeing his stats. Can someone tell me if his stats match the type of player he can be? And what us Preds fans can project him to be? He seems like a Marchand type player, to me. Again, never een him play besides maybe 10 minutes at our rookie camp. Info please!

Do you think he could be traded to the Jets? He's from Winnipeg and Petan is his line-mate and good friend.

But I heard he's going to Milwaukee next year as per Elite Prospects. But an extra year in Portland won't hurt.

He's playing in Milwaukee, this year. No need for him to play in Juniors another year, and I really doubt they would trade him unless it's a package for a top 6 forward. We have high hopes for him

He is one of the most effective WHL players I have seen in a while. Puts up a ton of points, hits a lot, causes havoc every game which results in power plays for his team, gets under every opponents skin, gets under opposing teams fans skin.. just an all around pain in the a#*... but a great player. Nashville drafted a dandy.... Hopefully he can take that play into AHL... He should be talked about way way more on HFBOARDS... Only issue is his size. Has his listed at 5'10 but that is an exaggeration. I would say 5'8-5'9 at the most
