It's weird cos nobody's calling Eric Lindros, Oliver Wahlstrom or Aaron Ekblad Swedish... Paul Stastny Slovak... Arthur Kaliyev Russian or Jake Virtanen or Matt Niskanen Finnish.. but if a European has a Canadian surname they're suddenly Canadian?

There are so many North American players with European parents.. it's not a big deal. Just let the kid play wherever.

Somewhat disingenuous argument as Eric Lindros is 3rd generation Canadian, Ekblad's great grandfather was Swedish. A little bit different than a hockey coach pursuing a temporary job offer from a hockey team.

What? He has a Finnish mother.

Not arguing Lamberts case at all. He is free to choose the country he plays for and that's fine. All I'm saying is that in the context of hockey the United States has a tremendous advantage with these dual citizens. More high level professional teams in the US by far than anywhere else in the world. It's not really a true case of immigration where a person goes to seek a new start somewhere else. If you wanted to talk about Lambert, hypothetical speaking his pregnant wife might have missed her flight from Philadelphia stayed an extra day and Bob's your uncle, Lambert is an American. Especially if there is money involved later on. My comment was in response to teravaineSAROS

Stay safe.

He will not play for two national teams in his career and it seems that he has chosen Finland. Currently he is ineligible to play with Canada.

Many players have two or even three nationalities. Paul Stasny for exemple among hundreds of others. Sporting nationality prevails.

Lambert is as Canadian as Draisaitl is Czech, Hughes's brothers are Canadians or Gostisbehere is French . It's anecdotal.

Yes, he doesn't speak Canadian. He is more Finnish than Zibanejad is Swedish.

To bounce back on your imbecile and useless remark, he is as Finnish as Zibanejad is Swedish and a lot of Canadian players also have an American or European nationality.

Why do people care about this stuff? Let him play for who he wants to play for.

If he doesn’t want to play for your country, accept it. Let him make his own decisions.

Because somehow here in Canada we have this weird culture:
Most non-First Nations Canadians have European heritage no more than two generations back. Yet, everyone feels Canadian and thinks Canada is the greatest country on earth.
So, if someone from the greatest country on earth has a child in Europe, that child better feel Canadian too because Canada is the greatest country on earth!!!!!1!11!!1!!1!!!1!
It doesn't really make sense and is a bit of a toxic culture.

So, I agree with you. Just stop worrying about who Lambert wants to play for and accept his decision.

To the people who might not know; Lambert just decided to leave IFK. This raises the chances of him playing for a Canadian Junior league, as there would be no real advantages in leaving the IFK org for another Liiga org.

We don't know what his next move might be, it's a minor shame as I thought HIFK had a great situation laid out for him.

Canadians just might get 'their boy' despite or because of having an overwhelming abundance of riches in hockey.

Maybe it's a good move for him. It's not like he'd be getting more than 20-30 games next season, and not in a top 6 role. Whereas in the OHL, he'd be a star player from the get go, in a league that's probably a lot better than the U20 Finnish league. He'll also get more media attention who'll hype him up to be the no. 1. Training possibilities in Canada might also be better, at least with more options.

It's not like this makes me respect him more, absolutely not, but it's not a huge minus in my papers. Neither would if he chose to represent Canada. If that's what he wants, good for him. And it's not like the Finnish national team has needed stand alone super stars in the past.

If these are all decisions made by his dad, that's too bad, but I still hope we'll get to enjoy watching him become a super star. If he doesn't, that's a shame, and it may or may not come back to this move. Nonetheless, he's a far way from the NHL, and won't get there without putting in the work.

He's 16.

Where does everyone think he'll play next year?

I'd assume OHL, cause what's the point with moving to a junior league if it isn't the best one of the lot? Doubt he's moving to anywhere in Europe, cause the training facilities wouldn't differ that much from Helsinki, and highly unlikely anyone is gonna pay a ton of more money for a kid than IFK already.

Who has the first pick of the CHL import draft? You have to think he goes first.

This is HIFK fault
Insiders think that IFK didn't promise playtime for him so he bolted, I don't think it's too bad of a stance if he just takes top 6 positions for granted.
Some rumors also say that his father was the influence for the move. We'll see.

Kid seems to have a high-maintenance dad. As long as he's guided by what he believes is in the best interest of his son's long-term development, I have no problem with having high demands and changing teams if those demands are not met. I just hope they truly are making the best possible decisions.
