Have you seen Horvat play? I'd be interested in how he looks compared to Couturier at the same age, statistically he's on pace for a similar first season.

I haven't seen much of him in the NHL, at all actually. Couturier was buried his first year with the likes of Rinaldo and 0 powerplay time, which sounds exactly like Horvat from the looks of this thread.

Horvat seems to be a better skater than Couturier from what I've seen, but doesn't think the game as well as Couturier does. I think they are actually pretty similar players, Horvat seems like down the road he'll be given a better chance offensively and have better numbers than Couturier will with the Flyers, they're just ruining this kid.

Yea I think you guys have Laughton on your second line ahead of him, he's a great player and has offense to give but the Flyers just love him on that checking line. I hope they give Couturier better line mates, I really liked him in the Flyers games I've seen.

Horvat is rapidly becoming untouchable as a potential franchise cornerstone, if not there already....close to 60% on the draw and strong as an ox down low...scary to think what this kid will be like when he's 23 or so....Schneider trade was a big risk for VanCity, but looks like they might have hit a home run with this one.

If 51.9% = "close to 60%" you need to go back to grade 8 math. Great for a 19 year old but let's not go spouting misinformation about how amazing he is.

He is no doubt a good faceoff man. He has games that he gets 50% and sometimes 60-80% depending.

I don't think anyone is arguing that he isn't excellent on the draw, especially for a 19-year-old rookie. All the poster you quoted was saying was that he isn't close to 60%, which he's not.

Many centres have games like this. 40-60% for three games, 65%+ the next two… etc., etc., rinse and repeat.
Horvat, while decent in the circle, is not an exception to these occurences
The career/season average is what is most important, indicating consistency.

He reminds me a lot of Patrice Bergeron. Clearly way behind Bergeron offensively, and will likely always be solidly behind, but his playstyle is very similar. Straightforward, hard nosed game, but with high hockey IQ at both ends of the ice. Excellent on draws, great defensively, solidly built and good at winning physical battles. Good finisher down low, good shot, makes simple plays well and consistently.

I think his upside is to have a defensive game and overall style similar to Bergeron, but offensively more of a 40-55 point guy than a 50-70 point guy like Bergeron. Basically a really good 2C.

Horvat, obviously from the video, has great potential.

I think Canucks are winning the trade that brought Schneider to New Jersey for the ninth overall pick in 2013. Schneider has been playing a great deal, but he hasn't been stellar a great deal.

Winning the trade?? Cory Schneider is a franchise goaltender, Bo is currently a checking line center.. on what planet is Horvat better? Certainly not planet Earth!

However, Schneider hasn't been winning games, whereas, Horvat's been producing. It seems that the Canucks are winning the trade.

Problem for NJ is by the time their team is good again, Schneider's prime will be over. While Horvat will still be in his early 20's. I wouldn't say NJ lost the deal, but VAN did very well compared to other goalie trades in recent times.

Just checked back to spring-summer 2013 in this thread. I was pretty adamant Horvat was a gem and it's looking pretty bang on.

I don't disagree there. The value was fantastic considering the circumstances. I imagine both teams are happy with the exchange.

The stats don't lie, and Schneider playing on a weak Devils roster and posting up a 2.29 GAA and .923 is sensational.

I love Horvat as much as everyone else on the Canucks board, and love how he has been playing, especially as of late, but we were fleeced in that deal, and I still believe that unless Horvat somehow emerges as our #1C (which I see him being a high end #2C), then I think that we got the short end of the stick.

Can you imagine Schneider on a team like the Jets? They would of been quite the force.

Schneider with the Jets could have been quite powerful, I agree.
True, true, based on his GAA and SV%. It's pretty above-average.

As for the trade, it's true we could've gotten more than just the ninth overall. In fact, from Luongo, we got a good center, Matthias, and a future backup, Markstrom.

I still think Schneider is ****ing great.

It was just such a huge gamble to trade that calibre of a goalie for a ninth overall pick.

I'm mostly enjoying his dad being cut to during games and **** lol, he's having the time of his life.

It's dumb to look at trades in terms of winning or losing. New Jersey needed a replacement starting goalie and Schneider was a great pick up for them.

Rather what this is showing today is that with needing to move a goalie Gillis made the right call (or at least not the wrong call) going for the singular high value asset rather than a larger package of lesser assets. Comparing it to today's Buffalo trade Vancouver got the equivalent of Rasmus Ristolainen straight up for Kane instead of a package of Armia, Lemieux and a 1st.

In terms of today's Buffalo trade, I think we could've gotten Ristolainen+ for Kane. Schneider was deemed to be a top franchise goaltender in 2013. Ninth overall + a couple of minors could have sealed the deal more fairly for the Canucks.

That video is great on so many levels.

I'm gonna be honest with ya, at this moment New Jersey has the better player in the trade, bar none. A starting goalie has move value then a 4th or 3rd line player as we call Horvat. That said it's a great trade for both teams.

Sure New Jersey is struggling, not to say Vancouver is not out of the woods yet.

If you truly ask me, even right now, I much rather not have made that trade and hang on on trade Luongo down the road, even despite us getting Ryan Miller as a free agent. Schneider is going to be a beast.

There was no evidence to suggest that Schneider was going to sign an extension with the canucks after his deal expired. We could've been in the situation where we have no Schneider, No Luongo, and No Horvat. It would be par for the course for this franchise to see something like that happen. Ideally you keep Schneider but am I the only one that was worried being around the goalie controversy so long he would just leave to greener pastures once he became a UFA?.
