Agreed. It would say a lot of bad things about the Leafs scouting staff if this tournament swayed them in any direction. This has been a long year and enough time for their scouts to look at both these guys. They didn't just start paying attention to Matthews or Laine or anyone in the top 5 since the lottery.

The tournament shouldn't sway Hunter or anyone on the Leafs. Just a good chance to see what you are getting in a couple months and how Matthews handles players at this level and with the linemates he has here.

I don't think he or anyone would be saying the opposite. No one would be saying "well Laine is so fantastic that he's clearly going first overall so we're going to draft Matthews." There would be a lot of hype and excitement about drafting Laine second. A feeling that it's a shame the Leafs couldn't pick first overall and get the center, but that it's still a great result to get an elite winger.

I get that Canucks fans are upset they fell out of the top 3, but it's not our fault. Sorry if we're happy about getting a franchise centerman.

No, its great you are getting one finally. You guys deserve it. All I was saying is that if Laine was going to be your pick, the Laine thread would be exploding about how he is better than Auston. Regardless of that though, you should be happy.

Meh, there's still a group of leaf fans that think he is better. Also why would Laine being our pick change anything. Theyre both fantastic players and both are close talent wise

you would be saying the exact opposite if you had the number 2 selection. Why is Laine being sold short all of a sudden? The guy is likely a franchise player. Yeah he is a winger but will be a fantastic player in his own right. The circle jerking on this forum since the lottery is a bit much.

The Laine thread and even the Matthews vs Laine thread are for talking about Laine.

How is it Leaf fans excited about getting a potential franchise C in Matthews a circle jerk? It's an Auston Matthews thread after all

It is smart of the US to bring their young talents to the world championships. Must be so good for Matthews to get this experience. He is playing against a line of McDavid, Matt Duchane and Brad Marchand. That is some defnesive practice for you.

Was the same with Eichel last year. Prepares them for NHL for sure.

this kid is playing with scrubs against a stacked Canada team and still making things happen. His line is running all the plays through him.

a few things i'm noticing with him:
- he regularly wins 1 on 1 battles for the puck. Out muscles the Canadian player and strips them of the puck
-hand eye coordination is excellent, knocked a pass out of mid air
-excellent vision
-excellent possession player
-excellent speed, he has explosive power but doesnt use it all the time
-defensively responsible, back checks all the time. His awareness and coverage is exceptional.
-smooth hands
-been very good on the draws.

Second period has been amazing. He's muscling out NHLers off the puck like its nothing, his skating is just so fluid for a guy his size. He looks huge out there.

Beautiful assist by Matthews on that Canada goal ;)

In all seriousness, he looks good.

Haha, good lesson learned. It goes quick when you have the best PK guys in the world out there. Hence why this tournament is so good for him and Laine. But I wouldn't say it was a sloppy pass, he knocked it down mid air.

Anyway Matthews is star quality. I have been watching hockey since early 90's and this is definately one of those very rare prospects. I would definately put him in a tier above Tavares and Stamkos. That is my opinion however.

Ya he's been one of the best players on the ice in this game.
Extremely explosive, making good defensive plays and very strong in the faceoff dot. As a Leafs fan I was hoping he'd have a good game but hes been alot better than I would have guessed.
