Looked better than I thought he would against a good Canadian team.

Should be fun tomorrow against Belarus

Maroon and Schroeder. US was pretty badly overmatched, the defence is evidently inexperienced.

Auston was good today, overall. Looks like a great skater

Yeah Canada was pretty superior. From an individual Matthews standpoint I don't see that as a problem how ever. It is great for him to experience stacked opposition. This US team stand no chance to win anyway so it is all about getting as much experience as possible.

this kid is playing with scrubs against a stacked Canada team and still making things happen. His line is running all the plays through him.

a few things i'm noticing with him:
- he regularly wins 1 on 1 battles for the puck. Out muscles the Canadian player and strips them of the puck
-hand eye coordination is excellent, knocked a pass out of mid air
-excellent vision
-excellent possession player
-excellent speed, he has explosive power but doesnt use it all the time
-defensively responsible, back checks all the time. His awareness and coverage is exceptional.
-smooth hands
-been very good on the draws.

A puck right out of mid air??? :handclap:

He was def. one of best players on USA, as he should be with this squad they're fielding. His skating is powerful but he won't get the speed of a McDavid or Larkin. Shot is best attribute and his size is really noticeable. Makes sense that he's ahead of his draft group in terms of size and strength since he is the oldest of this years top draft prospects (7 months older than Laine) and just played a year of professional hockey against adults.

Thought Matthews was really strong. He's big and strong and is great positionally. He just has really good hockey sense.

Is he excellent though?

I thought Auston Matthews was great today; he was responsible all over the ice. He was probably the best American defensive forward and was also the most consistently dangerous offensive weapon as well, which isn't saying a lot due to the overall poor American team, but still very impressive.

This is a player coaches can trust in all situations and is worthy of the number one overall selection.

He had that one beautiful pass today and overall played safe. Not happy he is with some awful line mates but maybe this will make him try to prove more.

I love that our boy Auston is getting underrated on the forums. So easy to distract the masses with shiny baubles.

He definitely looks like Kopitar or Barkov. I think his career will resemble Kopitars. Pretty much a dream for Leaf fans.

Higher potential offensively. Matthews can be a 40 goal scorer PPG+ player in this current NHL.

His offensive game gets underrated imo. He has nearly as much goal scoring potential as Laine -------- And is better in every other facet of the game.

So he will be elite two-way center, one of the best - with put 40+ goals and PPG then his ceiling is so much higher than McDavid, do you really say that?

His ceiling is not elite two-way player like it's not Eichel and McDavid, his ceiling is elite offensive center like Crawford say and he mentioned Joe Sakic, i see Malkin. He can be good or elite two-way center but he is so far away that, you just come to get back to the real life.

Watching the game today so far, Mathews seems to get more physically involved , going into the corners and back checking.

Good first period by Matthews. He was involved and made some good plays. He looks NHL ready to me. He will be a solid pick to Toronto or Winnipeg. A very professional hockey player is my impression.

Franchise changing elite center, can't get a much better ceiling than that. Leafs are so lucky.

The Leafs have the best player from the 2014 draft outside the NHL (Nylander), the best player from the 2015 draft outside the NHL (Marner), and the best player from the 2016 draft...

So, your point is that Leafs prospects don't make the NHL?:help:
