I would absolutely love it if he became the type of player the isles were supposed to get with Jokkinen before milbury came

Hm, I wonder if this summer showcase has caused a re-evaluation of his hockey IQ, it's the first time he's managed to produce against such competition and quite a significant accomplishment considering how poor his scoring's been in Finnish u-20 leagues.

I also tried to be looking because I hadn't seen the skating concerns for him. Perhaps last season his skating wasn't there because he was recovering from covid.

I won't be writing here for a while now (have to concentrate on other things in my life for some time), but before I go I'll copy/paste this here:

Here's the final points of the players that were drafted before Räty in this tournament:

4th pick defender Luke Hughes 0+0=0 (-1) / 2 games
10th pick Tyler Boucher 1+1=2 (-1) / 4 games
13th pick Matthew Coronato 0+2=2 (+0) / 4 games
14th pick Isak Rosen 1+0=1 (-4) / 6 games
18th pick Chaz Lucius 2+0=2 (-1) / 3 games
-----------------------------------------------------------
21st pick Fabian Lysell 0+0=0 (-5) / 6 games
24th pick Matthew Samoskewich 1+1=2 (0) / 2 games
28th pick Oskar Olausson 3+1=4 (-2) / 6 games
36th pick defender Shai Buium 0+0=0 (0) / 1 game
37th pick Josh Doan 0+0=0 (0) / 1 game
40th pick defender Scott Morrow 0+0=0 (-1) / 1 game
44th pick defender Aleksi Heimosalmi 0+1=1 (-3) / 6 games
46th pick Samu Tuomaala 1+1=2 (+2) / 5 games
51st pick Ville Koivunen 1+1=2 (+2) / 6 games
------------------------------------------------------------
52nd pick Aatu Räty 6+8=14 (+8) / 6 games

Scouts are going to change their mind based on one meaningless exhibition tournament?

Yah I don't think so.

How many more meaningful games have these guys played at this point of their careers? Many haven't played at all in recent years due to COVID-19.

The whole thing seems kinda bizarre. The guy showed no progress at all for like 1½ years and if anything looked to have regressed, and now all of a sudden he is starting to look like the player he was once hailed to become. Very strange. The guy must've worked harder than ever during the offseason, or something else must have changed. Will be interesting to see if he can keep this momentum going into the next season or if he'll regress back to his old self again.

Migth be even better, time will tell.
Really surprised none of the GMs took a gamble with him during the first round. Regarding the fact Bergevin took Mailloux...
Not impossible but thats very reactionary based on one wjss! Also aho is an amazing player, not many are better

The one thing I notice from his recent tournament is goals like these, is he has a great release and shot. Yes, it is truly hard to fathom he dropped to the 2nd rd. It would be hard pressed to find many players picked before him that can score goals like this. There are always head scratchers each draft year for players that inexplicable dropped. If Raty keeps this up, add his name to the list. Very impressive.

I'm happy Raty's doing well but his play over a 10 day period at this WJC Showcase camp is not an indicator of the kind of player he's going to be.

Ryan Poehling and Jesse Puljujarvi were WJC MVP's.

If Raty shows improvement over a longer period of time then you can start to call him a steal.

is this good? it seems good?

I am used to the Kabanov's and the Ho-Sangs... if this kid is a legit steal that would be MASSIVE for the isles org. We have no legit center prospects atm really...

Both of those players who you named especially Pulju would be highway robberies with 52nd pick...

Stars should've taken him with their second 2nd round pick. They picked back to back, could have had Stankoven and Räty. Instead took some dman

Especially with their love of Finns

I don't think either of those is a good comparison, both highly skilled but questionable work ethic/attitude problems. The work ethic didn't seem to be this guys reason for falling(he just had a very sub par draft year)

I’m talking about the raising expectations due to small sample sizes more so than the draft spot.

Poehling scored a hat trick in his first NHL game after winning the WJC MVP, and people thought he was a sure fire top 6 centre. It turned out not to be the case.

Again, Räty could become a stud and prove to be a massive steal. But that projection can’t be made off a WJC tournament, it needs to be made of consistent play in the Liiga.

Poehling is 22 years old. He can still be a top 6 center. Definitely can be a #3 center like a Pageau. Poehling is areadyba good defensive forward at his age.
