There's no blueprint. These players are their own individuals with their own challenges.

Räty was picked 52nd onto a good team, he has all the time in the world. I'm happy for him.
Correct. I'm not saying that as negative btw. i'm just saying that if he wants to be a great player. Hell, if he becomes a 3rd line center, good for him

He had a really tough year though. He was worse in Liiga than year before and was demoted to the u20 league. He did alright there, but a top10 caliber draftee should/would have torched that league. Not only was he not chosen for the u20 team (even his brother was) but he didn't even make it to the u18 team.

As a finn I hope he is now bouncing back, but I can't say whether it's this tournee or last season that's a fluke.
The whole Kärpät team was worse last season, they were a powerhouse team the season before, the season before last the had 2 players score over 50, last season they only had 2 players to score over 30, had he thrived last season in those circumstances he would’ve been a easy top 3 pick at least.

Imo he should’ve been picked to the u20 team, because it would’ve allowed him to play with his strengths which really wasn’t possible in the role he got in Kärpät, which really wasn’t favorable to him. Admittingly he didn’t do much to deserve a bigger role, but why they chose his brother then? Because he only scored 1 point more, and doesn’t have the upside he has.

I was one of the pretty many Finnish fans who thought leaving Räty out was a mistake, but I think the coach wanted experience and as they already had one young forward (Lambert) they decided to skip Räty. I also don't understand why they chose his brother, but he's older and if I remember correctly he was playing a pretty mature game so they maybe felt he's more suitable to a bottom-6 role. They also left out a player who'd been the best goal scorer of the team a year ago so Räty wasn't the only good player that was left out.

I do have some other theories as well, but I'll keep those to myself and there's no proof or I'm not even sure if I find them very likely.

Yes, he definitely should have been picked. After Järventie imploded they were missing a top 6 player and Räty could have been that guy. The first line had too much pressure to score. They did well, though the team could have used a better 2nd line.

Curious for the Finnish posters here

Will he be given a shot at this years world juniors?

Absolutely, it's quite hard to imagine a scenario in which he wouldn't. To me even the question is a bit surprising as it's such a clear case to me.

Well I guess anything's possible if everything went wrong in the FEL team, but I think it's very unlikely and after the way he's been playing in the U20 team he'd have to be pretty bad to be left out. I expect Räty to be one of the leading players in the U20 but we'll naturally have to wait and see how it goes.

It's a short sample size of course, but I was curious to see if there's top prospects playing in this U20 tournament and how they're doing. These are the top-20 picks I found:

4th pick defender Luke Hughes 0+0=0 (-1)
10th pick Tyler Boucher 1+1=2 (0)
13th pick Matthew Coronato 0+2=2 (+1)
14th pick Isak Rosen 1+0=1 (-2)
18th pick Chaz Lucius 2+0=2 (-1)

Aatu Räty has one more game played than all/most of the others, but his points 5+3=8 (+6) look promising when comparing him with the top-20 picks of this year's draft. Like someone wrote Räty might very well go in top-15 if the draft was held today.

I didn't know what to think of Raty immediately pre-draft. I loved watching him in his WJC debut, thought he was the real deal. Come draft day, I would have been thrilled if the canucks took a flyer on him at 41! Not sure why so many teams reached past Raty, Stankoven, Chibrikov and Morrow.. just felt like they were all at least first round talents. Anywho, funny draft equals funny picks. Good luck to Raty, I hope you make a lot of teams mad for passing on you.

The best thing is the balance in scoring. 5 goals 6 assists. He’s 1st in points, 2nd in goals, and 1st in assists.

Hirvonen and Bordelau (and many others) are almost a year older than Räty so hopefully by this time next year Räty will be even better. Räty's upside is huge, IMO definitely one of the best in this whole draft class, but of course there's still lots ow work to be done. Fortunately Räty is known as a very hard trainer.

I had him ranked 4th in the draft still on draft day lol. Obviously would have been crazy to take him there but still lots of GMs going to have egg on their face. Kids the real deal

I've also written that I see Räty as a kind of a top-5 (or at least top-10) pick that somehow happened to be available at 52. That also sounds crazy.

I understand there was some uncertainty about Räty after last season, but I've always believed in the upside and if Räty manages to bring it to the NHL level he's going to be a pretty phenomenal player.

E: Another primary assist, it's now 6+8=14.
