The point is that you can’t project a player’s career based of the World Juniors. A 2 week span of hockey is not an indicator of a player’s true potential. That’s built up over a long period of consistent play. In Raty’s case, that would be the Liiga.

Sure. But at least it is the first indicator that "the rot" has finally stopped. Also it gives you some confidence that the covid-woes are now behind him. Actually I kind of saw that already in the last few games he played last season. I mean the decline was over and there were signs of him finding his game again.

I’m talking about raising expectations based off small sample sizes, not about draft position.

I would agree that Puljujarvi at 52 is a good pick yes. The same goes for Poehling.

You can't necessarily project fully, but the list of players who lead the WJC in scoring and win the MVP but don't become NHL regulars is pretty small.

So if he were to dominate the WJC (like he seems poised to do), it would be a pretty strong indicator that he's destined to become an NHL regular at the very least. Which is great value for the 52nd pick.

Not too many players getting drafted in the second round get a NHL/AHL $872k contract right out of their draft season. I think that the Islanders are interested in bringing him over and paying off Karpat for his services. They want to put him Bridgeport.

Except that 3 other finns drafted in the second round / after have just signed their deals this week. Liiga teams get a six figure payment when their player makes an NHL deal (Before 15th of August, which explains the timing). COVID has hit Liiga hard financially so that's all this is about.

Seen some scouting reports that call him a low-IQ player. Seems very harsh, no?
I think calling it low is definitely quite harsh. Although so far I haven’t been convinced that he would have clearly good hockey IQ either. I tend to think that he has average or maybe a bit above average hockey IQ. Not the easiest ability to judge, although in my opinion the clearly most important ability for a true star hockey player.

Interesting point. Did you, or practically anyone, see two years ago that Rashnevsky would be doing now what he is doing?
Draft dynasty had him in his first round for the 2020 draft as an overages. Not sure about 2 years ago.

Manner wasn't his coach last year in the junior league, where he had bad production for his skill level.

His production actually dropped from the previous year, which is never a good sign for a prospect.
He had covid, which was the biggest thing ruining his season. I’m not sure what to think of him as a prospect and a talent yet, but I do believe that he is substantially a better player than last year showed. He is a pretty average skater, has a monster of a shot for a player his age, is pretty physical also for his age, and might have hockey IQ somewhere between average to even pretty good. The hockey IQ will after all define how good a player he can really become. If it’s only average, his ceiling could be a 3rd line center and floor out of the NHL. But if he after all has even pretty good hockey IQ, his ceiling should be a 1st or 2nd line center, and floor should be in the 3rd or 4th line. This season will hopefully show better how good he is really as a prospect.

Haven't read the whole thread but I completely disagree with the notion that he has "low IQ", his main issue was confidence, at least in my eyes when I was watching him. Confidence often gets confused for IQ, but it's not the same thing. I found his IQ to be actually quite high, especially his positioning and general awareness. His decision-making could use a little bit of work, but that's about it.

You could really be right with what you pointed out here. At least quite possible in my opinion. What I’m maybe not as sure about is how good his vision is. I don’t think it’s low, but it seems to be a bit inconsistent. But this could also have to do with some confidence issues.

While I understand you can’t judge a trade involving picks by the actual player taken as that is an unknown, knowing this was the Wings pick makes me bummed. Our prospect pool would look sexy af if we had Raty and Pinelli in it

isles got a good one

Agreed. And he is way ahead. Tearing up the 2nd best league in the world. Do you see Raty doing that in two years?
Anyone else remember Tolvanen dominating after being drafted too? How’s his career going? He wasn’t even a double overager
