Before the draft: What a bust, shit point totals, not worth it
After the draft: OMG what a steal by the Islanders in the 2nd round! Teams sleeping on him! What was my GM thinking select player X before this beast?!

Funny how fast it can turn around

I think that's an overgeneralization. Some people say "stay away" from any prospect for whatever reason, but many others also say, "If you could get (player x) at this point in the draft it would be a good pick."

The question is...How informed are the people saying these things, but that said - Things don't always need to be so extreme.

95% of the people commenting do not actually know anything about the player beyond his eliteprospects page, so both views are worthless.

If you go to the right team, it can help. Remember, all it takes is for one to take a waver on such a guy. We understand that he was doing poorly but you can also make the argument that we saw the exact same stuff from Sebastian Aho and even Barkov

I think he could be better than Kotka but Lundell is the best finnish prospect as of now. Lambert is probably the best one out of there in a real long time

Don't underrated offensive upside of Kotkaniemi. I think he is the same tier of Lundell. No doubt Lambert is better.

I know Kotkaniemis upside on offense, but he needs to show it more in the regular season than in the postseason

The upside for him is probably a top 6 player, with the floor as a bottom 6 PP and shootout specialist, which can be still quite useful for a team like Isles lacking natural snipers in the system. Key for him is to improve skating. Lee was a below average skater when he started turning pro and had improved over the years. Some players can find ways to skate better and some just cannot, it all depend on if they put in the hard work, pay attention to detail, and received outstanding coaching. I am however more concerned about the part about limited vision part and confidence as that is usually a requirement for any pro to excel in sport. If he can stay healthy and works hard, he will have a chance to be a contributing NHL player. Making NHL and have a successful long term career is not easy.

Not too many drafted players do, especially if selected outside round 1 from a draft not known for too many elite level talents. Most are work in progress and will need outstanding supports/patience from family, teammates, coaching and management, and even media to some limited extent. Of course the passion, the belief, ability to learn/handle pressures, and the hard work has to be there in the first place for success, in addition to good luck.

"It was a tough season for me on [Karpat], but I played for one of the best organizations in Finland," Raty said. "I think it's one of the most defensive leagues in the whole world, so we just had better centers than I, so I couldn't get any minutes. I don't know if (Edmonton Oilers center Connor) McDavid is going to score when he's playing eight minutes (per game)." Stubb said expectations prior to the 2021 Draft might have been overwhelming for Raty.

"The talent was always there," Stubb said. "He just had a tough season; there were a lot of expectations on him. He made the Karpat league team, and Karpat is one of the top clubs in Finland and has been for so many years. They had a tough season, though, and when you're a young player on a struggling team, it's not easy to play up to your own standard. I still think Raty will be a [heck] of a hockey player, he just had a rough season."

Prospects are always a crapshoot and I don’t know why but I just have a good feeling about Raty.

2023 there are Emil Järventie, Jesse Nurmi, Tuomas Uronen etc. This beginning season will show how good they really are and is anyone of them a potential top10 pick.
I really wonder if we ever see Finland getting a 1st overall player

Anyone else feeling like this guy could make his way over to the AHL this season? Seems like him and his coach didn’t see eye to eye getting 8 minutes a game isn’t great for developing. His English seems great in the interview that he gave so language wouldn’t be an issue. Skating is the big issue and the Islander may want him to work with the in house guys to fix that problem.

Under contract with Karpat next season, and unless he cracks the day1 roster or impresses at training camp, he should stay in Liiga and keep developing. I think he will certainly get more time this season than last year btw

At least not in the beginning of the season because Kärpät has a new coach, coming from Kärpät junior system, more dedicated on developing young player than the previous one was.

Was not aware of that. Yeah makes sense for him to stay another season in Finland then.
