How does a kid make the WJC team as a 16 year old, but not at 17? Was he gifted a spot last year in hopes of what he could be? Some kids can't handle the hype.

I don't think he was gifted a spot last year. He had a good start to the season, if I'm remembering correctly, but then he's struggled since. He probably wasn't scrutinized for a spot last year as much as he should've. If he was, maybe he doesn't make it. This year, he simply has struggled. I don't think it's any more complicated than that. It doesn't mean he's a bad prospect, but when you struggle to play well, play for a tough team to get minutes on, and have subpar coaching, it could all add up and a player could lose their place on the WJC team.

I have no clue what the scouts had moving in their heads saying he was the projected no.1 I've dug around trying to find material on him but i have never seen him do anything to suggest he'd be a 1st OA or a top 3 even. I believe the pressure from that projection maybe got to him abit aswell..

I generally agree, but I also think it was due to a lack of players to discuss. The older birthdays that we know about earlier because they played in higher age groups tend to be discussed first. And Raty theoretically is a player who would project well for these drafts because he's a natural center with good size who skates well enough. And not that I'm blaming anyone for this because its not a bad thing, but we tend to hear about Finnish prospects earlier than Swedish or Russian prospects, so I think the top Finn's are a little more hyped up earlier on from the locals who know their games before the NHL scouts do their own work of watching these players than we see with the other European prospects.

It was written in MTV3 I believe some weeks ago that it has been difficult for him to move between Mestis team and Kärpät (SM-Liiga/FEL) this season and dealing with the covid quarantines and delays from games. Who knows if he was one of the players who had covid since Kärpät did have some of those covid incidents. Of course covid doesn't usually affect so much on the younger guys but you'll never know. Maybe he gets more fatigued faster as a symptom of covid which is known to exist and athletes from other sports have complained about that. Something like that could really affect the motivation of some athletes so I find it as a possible explanation. I think that the kid can and will bounce back.

In terms of international play, Aatu Räty has to start focusing on U18 World Championships now. I think that the kid can and will bounce back.
Unless he got it before the season started I don't think he ever had enough days between games to have been quarantined.

And Räty is too old for the U18's, he just turned 18.

He’s still a candidate to be a first round pick no doubt, but this is a crushing blow if he still had aspirations of being a #1 pick.
Not making a your WJC team let alone preliminary roster as a 18 year old is frankly unacceptable if you’re supposedly as highly touted as Raty was, no matter the circumstances at hand.

Yeah this could be. A friend of mine has had it and is struggling severely from fatigue as well as breathing capacity.

It's especially hard during covid year with less games to show what he can do and many of the scouts not being able to see him live because traveling is hard and live attendance restrictions, thus having to watch him via video.

Looks like he scored against Kalpa, anyone watched the game? Kärpät is a mess right now, but looks like he got decent minutes on their 2nd line.

At this point it looks like the question isn't whether he's first overall, but whether he's in the first round

Laughable to be so dramatic and critical. He is a first rounder without any doubt, and if he can be healthy he will tear it up in next years WJC with Lambert in Pennanens organization.
It's been post out for him this season with everything from illness to rejection etc. Can he turn it around? I hope and believe it will make him stronger mentally and even more prepared for the future. The talent is there. I mean just look at it, he's being bashed and somewhat ridiculed and the kid has PPG in u-20´s and 0,3 PPG against men when he's just turned 18 and coming from illness or injuries and been unlucky at times. At the end of the day, the stats are not great but 7 points overall in 21 games against pros when he's just turned 18? Give this kid a break.
The question is rather if he has the potential or mental strength to become elite, top6 or top9 kind of forward in the NHL. He will probably get stronger and faster, the question is if he has or will develop his IQ to become a great player. His stickhandling and skill is obviously there.

My spouse's father got it a while back and he still is winded. The man was in great shape, lived a physical, active lifestyle. I think there are long term consequences for some people. I think some of these players will need some time to get back to elite athlete O2 levels.

I was very skeptical of those who had him 1OA heading int0 the season based only on viewings from the WJC last year, and that skepticism has proven to be valid. However, I think there's been a big overcorrection. He's certainly not a second round player. You can see the talent level. He's got a good shot, tremendous hands and puck control, and he's an above average skater from what I can see, though he does have a bit of a heavy foot as a lot of Finnish prospects do. He's not in my top 10 right now, but purely based on skill level, he should get taken in the 7-15 range. There's a good player here.

I think that sounds about right. I agree with this.

His issue seems to be positioning without the puck. This has been the case ever since 2020 WJC.
