I’m neutral on this. Not a fan of ether team. I have not hitched my wagon with my team out of the playoffs to ether of these teams. That said, I would have given him 2 games. I understand 3. And 1 would have been to little. He made a horrible choice in a split second that deserves suspension but I don’t think he stepped on the ice with intent. That said I’d rather the league make a trend of going one degree too high on a suspension than too low. It’s better to shoot high then dial back when needed than shoot to low and have to react to push up.
But thats the thing, if the next time somebody had the exact same play as Bunting, it could be no games, could be 7 games, you just don't know, DoPS will surprise you every time

Cool then punish Cernak for the elbows he delivers to the head away from the puck pretty much every game he plays lmao.

Also, this bs about play away from the puck doesn't really hold weight it's just an interference penalty I don't get why whether the player has the puck or not matters when you shouldn't be elbowing someone either way nor charging the fact doesn't change that another player targeted someone else.

And here lies the issue. While technically this was an interference penalty, I would not reffer to a hit to the head away from the play as "just an interference"...

Interference penalty can mean different things, by calling it "just" interference you are trying to sell it as something less.

And for that matter you could be a total goon and get no games or be conner McDavid and gat 7, you just don't know

While I agree that the DoPS is very inconsistent, I have yet to see two plays which are exactly the same, "similar" typically means something very different. This also makes judging these plays very very hard.

Its not but targeting someone with or without the puck isn't much difference when you literally should not be using your elbow the guy with the puck isn't expecting an elbow either its against the rules.

Bad hits like this one do need to be taken out of the game. But in order to accomplish that, the DoPS needs to do a much better job of consistently applying this level of sanction against players who do shit like this.
You’ll never get consistency because every hit is different. I mean in this very thread people are talking about other hits that aren’t even close to the same.
But over the past few years I think the penalties have started to increase and I think that’s a good thing. Even if it’s one of my teams players that gets suspended.

Should we throw out all cases of Case Law then?

No 2 events are exactly the same, so "judging cases is very hard".

Precedent is not for mirrored events.
Precedent is used as a guide for similar events in the future.

By similar events, it means similar aspects of the events.

This is the issue I have with the people who always whine about "inconsistency". They always bring up plays that are nothing like the play being discussed.

If you think the suspension on Bunting is inconsistent, then go find another example of a player getting less games for elbowing a player in the head who was nowhere near the puck. Any play that doesn't check off all those boxes are completely irrelevant to the discussion.

If you want the benefit of the doubt dont spend the entire regular season making a name for yourself as a douche bag. f*** Bunting and the Leafs... pile of trash all around.

How much time did chernek get the last time he was suspended

Please explain to me why Hartman got 1 regular season game and Bunting gets 3 playoffs game.
If it were me I would say both hits are 2 game suspensions under equal circumstances(meaning if Hartman's was in game 1 of the playoffs). I think it's they're bad hits taking advantage of another player.

But I can see an argument that a player is entitled to defend himself with a reverse hit if a player wants to hit them themselves. There is a world where Hartman gets rid of the puck and a player comes in and hits him. So while it's blatant interference it's possible that Ehlers could finish a check on him in that situation - he wasn't and that's what made it so egregious and an awful hit.
There is no reason for Cernak to be hit
