But interferance, i'd make him sit for 2 minutes

This play in 2019 got 2 games. The significant difference here is Bunting lead with his elbow and targetted Cernaks head, which earns extra punishment. And Cernak is injured as a result.

Again, it's not rocket surgery.

he basically got 7 games, for a first time suspension, 2 playoff games if they were being harsh, i know its only the first game but it will turn out to be the longest suspension garanteed

No, he actually got 3 games and it was well deserved. He elbowed a guy in the head, away from the puck. Complain all you want, it was an idiotic play and he deserves every bit of his punishment.

I have read this a few times and I have no idea what you are saying.

I thought 1 or 2 games. 3 seems extreme but...

I find it mildly amusing this was 1 game only.

Is elbowing a guy adjacent to the puck legal or exculpating in any way?

Each game in the playoffs is worth 2 regular season games, 3 playoff games are worth 6 regular season games and the half that he missed last night will total 7 regalar season games

For real though I think the calculation is this:

1 game for the hit + 1 for the injury + 1 because it was in a highly publicized game.

The DOPS has long shown they care far more about hits when they happen in higher profile games. This being a more talked about series and a game on ESPN definitely matters to them compared to a random Tuesday night in February that’s only shown on an RSN

Do you actually not see the difference in this play to Bunting's? Okposo had the puck and was eligible to be hit. Cernak had his elbow tucked in and caught him with it because Okposo tried to dodge the hit at the last second. The only thing Cernak did here that caused a suspension was the hit was going to be high regardless. Whereas Bunting hit a guy who wasn't anywhere close to the puck, lead with his elbow, and extended upwards into his head.

You never know what you're going to get with NHL rulings. The hit by Cernak above gets 1 game. Bunting 3 games and going waaay back to 2011, Boychuk got nothing for breaking Mason Raymonds back away from the play. Yep, always a mystery.

I'm surprised the DoPS got one right for a change.

Cernak was nowhere near the puck so it was a hit on an ineligible player that resulted in an elbow to the head and a head injury.

This wasn't a hit gone bad. Plays like this that aren't hockey plays and should always be punished severely if they want to protect players brains.

oh, he deserved a suspension, no question, its just the length

I get major Alex Burrows vibes from Bunting. Constant whining, bitching, diving, recklessness. Going to hurt the Leafs in the long run.
