You missed my point. If the other team's top 3 are better than Vatanen then he would be lost to Vegas unless they keep just 4 forwards. The draft rules on D don't distinguish between rh/pp qb etc.

Not really. Not every team has a RHD PP QB defensemen just entering their prime signed to a good long term deal, which was my point. Someone like Vats would be a welcome addition to many teams. I also don't think many teams actually have 3 current defensmen better than Vats who they would rather protect.
I want to know what teams are out there that see Vatanen as such an upgrade that they are willing to lose their current #3 d man, a top six forward and take on a 5m contract.

because apparently it's impossible to get Bieksa to waive his NMC or to buy him out and it's impossible to trade Vats so we have to go with the 8 players and 1 goalie route.
I don't think that is too bad but I am going to guess that Dumba would be traded before he would be left unprotected and I don't think anyone in their right mind would pick Malcolm Subban who I think will have one or two days until he becomes an UFA if Boston doesn't re-sign him before that. Maybe it is a RFA which might be more reasonable.
Leivo will be exposed before Leipsic
Also the D there have some decent trade value. A team like the Leafs would offer something, anything for Dumba / CDH / Pokka etc instead of letting them go for nothing

(Let's not count the last 2 months of 2015-16 to not complicate things too much)
Phaneuf has 5 years left including this 2016-17 season. The total salary still owed to him is $33,000,000 (average of $6,600,000 per year)
Cowen + Michalek + Greening salaries THIS year = $11,700,000
Now you subtract that 11.7 from 33.0 and it gives you 21.3 as the real cost to the Sens for having Phaneuf (since they saved 11.7 by unloading those contracts). For Ottawa, it's exactly like if Toronto retained 11.7 in salary, except that they also got rid of 3 contracts on the 50 contracts limit (which would have expired after this year anyway)

Man that forward core is ugly. Stajan as your #2 yikes. Also, no chance Leipsic is exposed, he's been excellent this year and has developed nicely. Someone like Leivo would be exposed. They'd trade Leipsic before giving him up for nothing. He'd be very easy to trade.

-NYI trade Calvin De Haan to Toronto for picks + prospects
-MIN trade Matt Dumba to Toronto for picks + prospects then:

To all who think Vegas is going to draft Esa Lindell: Who is Dallas protecting? Klingberg, Johns are locks. Do you think they are going to elect to protect expiring UFA Oduya, Jordie Benn, or Dan Hamhuis with one year remaining?

if I'm vegas my desire is to get a couple top 5 picks to start the franchise when my fan base is still in honeymoon... so drafting a lot of semi useful vets that might win games isn't really the best plan
I will take guys that I think are tradable... and try to retrade them for a maximum return of picks and prospects
I will probably fill the majority of my roster with overpaid ufa on 1 year contracts... whoever has success will be traded for more picks and prospects
I will make sure to dress a very tough lineup with fighters... you got to give the fans something to cheer about
I definitely wont have a nhl caliber goalie winning games that I don't want to win
defense doesn't sell tickets... so no talented goalies...
I would take a couple of offense only guys... tell them to run lose and score goals... a guy like nail yakupov... some ahl snipers that don't play enough defense to play on other teams...
but mostly... the key to success is getting those top 5 picks to build around... and its really in years 3-4-5 that you start to add quality top 4 dmen and quality 2nd and 3rd line forwards to try to win games with

Man if Vegas takes Jurco from Detroit, I will be happy and thrilled. But i think we lose Sheahan to Vegas instead which is fine by me. The way he's playing so far this year.

Why draft Brown at the expense of taking another asset when you can get LA to add significantly to him in a trade? Even then while I like the idea of Vegas trading for bad contracts+assets, brown's deal is so long that it could be on the books when the cap is actually a problem.
Taking him in the draft would be insane

It's impossible to predict draft right now for a bunch of reasons, the main one being McPhee will be talking to all the other GMs leading up to the expansion draft, leveraging the threat of taking someone into value elsewhere.
