Jack should not have been appointed the chosen one and that is on the Sabres. He was made the captain when it should have been ROR. He became disgruntled and stopped striving to be elite.

He will go to Vegas where he will be a cog in the wheel with established captains. I am sure he will do great. I hope his surgery works out and it holds for him. He will never sadly be McDavid.

the Sabres can start with a new group with salary cap to make some moves. Best of luck to him
This is where Murray failed most spectacularly: he went after players he liked with no regard for what it takes to build a winning environment. Eichel never should have been put in the situation he was. That's not to say he (or Reinhart, O'Reilly, etc.) is absolved of blame for the locker room issues. It was an organizational failure from top to bottom.

Truth is definitely in the middle. There were clearly real problems with Eichel as a team leader / captain, or we wouldn't be here.

It wasn't all dumb Botterill moves.

I think even the biggest Eichel fanboy will admit he probably shouldn't have been captain, at least not as young as he was.

In the end though, no hockey player can use leadership to transcend a shitty roster. Messier couldn't do it in Vancouver. Clark couldn't do it in Toronto.

Success of the team in hockey skews the individual perception of a player. The same player can be a locker room cancer on a bad team is a leader of a good team. See Ryan O'Reilly as St Louis's captain for an example of that.

LeBrun: Sabres GM Kevyn Adams on the process behind moving Jack Eichel

I doubt that will change the minds of people that think Eichel should have been traded over the summer, but it sure seems like two guys like Tuch & Krebs weren't on the table over the summer.

I think over time some offers for Eichel will leak out. While "Tuch and Krebs" specifically may not have been on the table, I'd wager "Young Middle 6 winger under contract, top 30 NHL prospect, a 1st and a 2nd" or the equivalent probably was.

Though, my favorite quote has to be

“For me, there was never a pressure point that we needed to do it by a certain time,”

...yet the deal got miraculously across the finish line hours before Eichel did a media tour. Right after details about the deal being on the "1 yard line" and specifics about a deal with Calgary were leaked to the press after months of silence.

In the end, it was likely his lack of urgency early in the process that left him with trying to play 2 teams off of each other to squeeze out an extra asset.

I think the only people who thought OReilly was a 'bad locker room guy' were complete morons, and Terry Pegula.

Oh we should be so lucky. Peca led us (Hasek really) to a cup final, then became Connolly and Pyatt, the pick became Ryan Miller and Mike Wilson became Rhett Warrener who became Drury.

I'm not talking about the knock-on impacts of the deal - the pick turning out to be one of the best goalies they've ever had or that they would get prolonged use out of the other parts of the deal - just that the similarities of the initial deal remain.

I think a decision was made that you could not have 2 captains in the room and they chose capt jack. Again Jack should not have been appointed captain and that is the Sabres fault. And the hacks will say whatever they get told to say

I don't think either O'Reilly or Jack at that point in time should've been named captain. It's not like Ryan made a great first impression by driving drunk into a Tim Hortons right after arriving here. Him being captain of the Blues now as an older and more mature man doesn't really give us hindsight on what should've been here. That's why I think those saying Cozens or Dahlin or whoever should get the C now are crazy.

Love a guy like Tuch getting a fair look once he arrives.

Adding this back in, J.S. Dea talked about how different Crosby is as a captain compared to someone who would publicly dress down a staff member for making a mistake. Also said Sid seeks out new arriving players and treats everyone with respect... unlike in Buffalo.

Good catch. Yeah, it definitely seems possible that Gionta was referring to Eichel.
Seems like it’s more than just a coincidence that both guys mentioned treating staff members with respect.

The "something changed" moment. Forgot which Insider said it. EF, Merriman, or ?

Yeah, that.

And if you follow the EF line from July where it was 'Krebs is off the table', it's not hard to figure out. Once that was announced, Vegas-Buffalo rumors were nearly daily.

I bet Adams would've taken Krebs in July. I'm glad he waited to actually get him in November. I personally would've only taken Zegras or Byfield over him.

Newhook and Girard and a 1st would be slightly comparable but I'd still much prefer Krebs and Tuch.

I doubt this is even close to the truth because its been said Colorado and Buffalo didn't even get passed the Eichel salary retention talks which has been on record from multiple sources with blue checkmarks.. not some random named NHL_Watcher

That twitter account quotes actual sources from things like EF podcasts. In this case the source Mike Chambers of the Denver Post. Some Avs fans are saying Chambers isn't reliable so it's possible it's not accurate but it's not something NHL_Watcher is pulling out of his ass.

Right off the bat, Whitney is full of shit, blaming Pegula for Jack not getting the ADR surgery instead of the professional opinion of the Sabres' medical staff. Boston hockey mafia.

Starting at 14:55.
chiclets is honestly a bad podcast. just some weird gambling addict mysogenistic bros with really dumb hockey takes living in the barstool bro echo chamber. the only reason i listened to it for as long as i did (maybe 6 months) was Biz, the rest of them are pure clowns. they pretend to be classy but they are really just dirtbags imo

this is my assessment independent of the eichel interview

ror definitely had that incident which was inexcusable, but he at least always seemed like he was 100% about working hard on and off the ice, and would be a good example for everyone on the team. the only reason jack got the C was his contract. he failed miserably in all facets of leadership
