A couple of things I find ironic about the general media reaction to the Eichel trade:
1.) In an era of hyper-sensitivity about player well-being and safety, Eichel is being praised for advocating for himself and Vegas is being praised for allowing Eichel to do as he pleases "with his body". Can we assume that this view only applies to this situation and that it doesn't apply to the player who wants to play in the important playoff game even though he just had his 4th concussion of the season? Does it apply to the player who has a back or neck injury who just needs to keep taking Torodal to get through the schedule? To the player who is self-medicating with illicit drugs or alcohol? I mean, it's their body. I sincerely hope that Eichel comes out of this surgery healthy and that he has no ongoing complications; if things go wrong though, there will be a lot of media folk who will need to wear that they championed a player's right to have a medical procedure that many experts apparently think is too risky.
2.) For months we were told that the Sabres needed to recognize that they are trading damaged goods and can't expect a big return for Eichel. Then, after the trade, the media consensus appears to be that Vegas gets an "A grade" and hit a home-run by finally getting the franchise centre they need. I thought Eichel was damaged goods or, at the very least, that there was uncertainty about the player he would be 6 months or a year from now? Where did that uncertainty go?
