Had magic lottery balls won you McDavid it would've potentially been the turning point of the entire franchise. There's no accounting for sheer, dumb luck. I know that's what the purpose of the lottery is for but I also hate when a team who genuinely sucks can't get a break
Please. You don't gut your entire franchise for a small chance to take McDavid. The whole thing was idiotic.

I agree...I think Vegas should have added at least another young player/prospect, and maybe even another draft pick, especially when there were rumors of other teams interested...Hard to believe GMKA couldn't get more than this return...If Eichel returns to form Buffalo got hosed....I'm not a gambling man but if I was I'd put money that Eichel does return to form.
The pick is kinda f***ed, a protected 1st? Come on.

Glad to see no useless cap dump was coming back either. I shudder to think what this trade would have been with Murray or Botterill in charge.

Solid B+ on Adams here. Adds Tuch & Krebs to the roster. Goes into 2022 with 3 1sts. Moves a $10 million salary with no retention or taking a salary dump in return.
^ Yeah, that's where I'm at with it too after letting it sit for a few hours. Solid B.

Hope Krebs is a mentally strong player. He is going to have enormous pressure on him. Donny guide him!
Not just Krebs, Tuch too. A bit more AHL seasoning for Krebs, like Quinn, and we should start seeing NHL results.

Adams just said he was waiting out for the best return...If this was the best return, my question is, how bad could have the other trade offers been from other teams ??

I have to think an equivalent package was available this summer.

Did MN offer Fiala, one of Boldy/Addison, and a 1st and a 2nd?
Did the ducks offer Gibson, 3rd OA, and mix and match of Lundestrom, Perrault, and other lessor prospects?
Did LA offer Turcotte, 8th OA +++ for him?

We will probably never know. I have to think several teams from this summer could have meet or beat the eventual return. Really feels like Adams set the bar so high he never got into actual negotiations until there were only 2-3 realistic bidders instead of 8-10.

Idk, I still don't think it was that bad if a move. Trying to resign vanek and miller would not have resulted in winning.

It was just a comedy of errors. I don't think "culture" is the be all end all, but Murray had a core of guys that couldn't handle adversity and a coach that couldn't handle the players.

In retrospect eichel, kane, ror, and lehner being the prominent guys in the locker room was a joke, not to mention a sharply declining moulson who didn't seem to be the most driven guy.

Had we used the kane and lehner assets on different guys, and not iced a horrendous defensive group, we're probably looking at a different result.

To build on your points…..

The issue with the tank was the approach. Tearing it down was definitely the correct move. But Murray’s entire focus was on finishing last. There was no attempt at development. Then Murray thought he could pivot on a dime to winning after drafting Jack. The pivot actually started before the tank was even over (Kane/Bogo tarde).

When you add in the subpar drafting, using of a lot of picks/prospects in trades and hiring Bylsma. We ended up with a organization without a lot of young talent and no attempt to nurture the talent we did have. Disco is the complete opposite of a development coach.

Had we taken the approach we’re taking now maybe things would have worked out better. But that would have required smarter people running things.

HFboards - I'll give you one barely used bag of pucks for Eichel. Final offer.
HFboards after the trade, while still being much better than whatever most fans offered - LoLoLoOLl FLelEEceEd. Buffalo fans said they were going to get 20 1st rounders!!!

Sabres fans wanted a bit more, so we're stupid and yet we got "fleeced." HFboards logic.

I’m convinced 50% are trolls without knowing it and 40% are just goldfish-memoried morons. The other 10% are the few who make HF decently worthwhile.

Clearly all options were explored, this couldn’t drag on much longer, and this was the best offer available. Tuch should be back this year, right? If Sabres challenge for a playoff spot, nice add- if not, whatever, he seems to fit the system. We got the parts wanted for the future and a sure thing either way- once we didn’t get someone to overpay early in the off-season this was the best timing imo. I could quibble over details, but once again, seems they weighed all offers and this made the most sense- can’t draw blood from a stone at a certain point, I’m happy with the considered return we’ve gotten.

It's basically:

1st
Tuch = 1st
Krebs = 1st

and the value of a 3rd; vegas 2nd for buffalo 3rd. Buffalo 22+23 3rd would be about vegas 2nd

And I have to think all they got were lowball offers in the summer. Look, I can speculate too!

People love to shit on buffalo. The media was estimating the value lower than this and was critical of Adams for holding out. Whatever.

Edit: PLUS Adams did not take back any conditions other than draft protection. Could have been a lot more complicated and attached to Eichel's performance post-surgery. I truely believe Eichel will be back to elite status after the surgery, but there were SO MANY PUNDITS who were moonlighting spine specialists that swore he is never going to be the same.

Echoing others in the hope that they still try to strengthen the roster for this year

Lean into a plan to wring out 20 or so decent games from a variety of aging goalies. Anderson, pick up Quick on the cheap, see what Essensa is up to...

Anyone have a good list of vets with 1-2 years left on their contract whose teams might be looking to dump?

I think a lot of that will be coming from within this year. If EVERYTHING goes right we're adding Tuch, Peterka, Krebs, Samuelsson, and Quinn to the lineup in place of guys like Butcher, Bjork, Caggiula, Ruotsalainen, Eakins, etc...(who ever is deserving) as we progress through the season. Mitts and Jokie will also bench a few of those guys.

Obviously these players have to earn their spot, and a couple of them may need more seasoning, but the hope is this squad can be competitive this year and we find roles for these younger players. That's what's important to me. Hopefully we have an idea of the roles the youngers players can fill going into next season, and you do that by at least getting a glimpse of those players.

Next year we should be eyeing a playoff push, so hopefully some swift moves can be made to boost those odds. Nothing too crazy, but if things go well this season for the younger guys itching to get called up, and we have an idea of the roles they'll fill next season, then it gives Adams an idea of the type of players he should target to fill the empty roles.

Omg guys! Adams could have totally gotten more if he did this trade before the season! Vegas was definitely offering more back then. So was New York and so was Calgary!

Am I doing it right?

The first line is obviously sarcasm. This is a fine return. It's not what a healthy Eichel would return but that just wasn't going to happen. Waiting, in my opinion, probably got us Krebs instead of a lesser prospect.

Its odd that i trust this organization’s player assessments. Doesn’t feel right
So far Bjork seems to be the only swing and miss of guys they've identified as having actively pursued
