Confirmed Signing with Link: [BUF] Kyle Okposo (7 Years, $6.000M AAV)

He's got 2 very young kids, his daughter is like 3 and his son is like 6 months old. Moving to French speaking Montreal would be a serious culture shock. Him and his family probably wanted to remain in America.

That explains why Buffalo appealed to him imo. We've been saying that Buffalo will appeal to older players and family men, guys who could care less about nightlife and far more about education options and neighborhood safety.

The Sabres don't need Okposo to be an all star. We have better players. He needs to come in and be a top 6 contributor and I think he is a great signing for that.

I'm not a fan on big UFA signings being a flyers fan. Never goes well. You are paying for someone's best. If they get it they just earn the contract. If they don't or decline it's bad news. And players will of course decline by 35. A little earlier if more physical. This is a good July 1 deal, but don't like it overall.

That's where he succeed. The isles counted on him to be he #1 scoring winger and option behind Tavares.

He will be much better having not being counted on to be the go to guy.

That makes more sense. I agree with the whole wanting the puck thing/low hockey IQ. Before you said:

That doesn't make sense. Kane is very consistent.

It was more about how frustrating both can be. Kane gets tunnel vision and will pepper the net with innocuous shots, he often forgets that he has linemates. Okposo can do the same thing, he plays with the puck for like 30 seconds (that toe drag move, make it a drinking game) and seem to completely forget that he has linemates until he turns the puck over at the offensive blue line when Tavares and the LW are stuck down low. If you had a camera on Tavares' face, he'd be like 'WTF are you doing? Pass the damn puck!' - Eichel would do the same thing.

Okposo could be an abomination for the entire game and then pull something out of his ass and you're like, 'where the hell did that come from?'. It's quite amazing.

He consistently tries hard, consistently chips puck up wing and out skates the defense, consistently will beat down guys who want to drop the mitts with him no matter how many times in a single night, consistently shoots from whoever he touches the puck regardless of the angle or quality, he consistently embarrasses himself and the team. Yup, Evander Kane is the Sabres most consistent player by a lot.

Then I don't get why these contracts are so brutal if a buyout just reflects remaining salary. You pay them a ton of money to sign now, and if they become albatross contracts in their late 30s you buy them out on the cheap.

What's the problem?

Salary does not include signing bonus. Signing bonus gets paid no matter what, it's why Clarkson hasn't and won't be bought out.

Weird, the Islanders did not resign him for that figure. And the Islanders grabbed Ladd for $5.5M. I'd rather have Okposo for $6M on my team.

 Really though. That pretty much sums it up perfectly. Night in, night out he is the same guy on and off the ice.

I agree with all of that.

The first time I've heard that way of comparing them. Everything else I heard was, "Not physical! Inconsistent! Skilled!"
They're opposites when it comes to those categories.

Now I'm confused again. Ladd/Okposo/Lucic/Whoever sign today and receive a hefty singing bonus as part of their contracts.

Let's say in 2021, one of these guys is a complete anchor and the team decides to buy him out. Does the signing bonus from 2016 affect the 2021 buyout at all? Has David Clarkson not receiving his signing bonus yet?

Apologies for not being able to express my thoughts clearly the first time.

I will say this about Okposo though, the guy is character +++ and he'll be a great soldier for you guys. I'm very happy for him and his family that he finally got paid and wish him all the best because he deserves it. You will never see his name on the police blotter, you know what I mean.

Bonus comes in at the start of the year and can't be bought out. For example I think ROR gets $12 million this year as a bonus and $1 million in salary. If it was a 1 year deal and they bought out that number the buy out would be $12 million this year plus 2/3 of $1 million spread out over 2 years. The bonus counts in full each year it's paid.

The guy has probably been the most underpaid guy in the league for years ..(Ironically along with Nielsen and Tavares)

Awesome. I didn't realize he was that big of a character guy. Love that.

Also in reference to what I said, you weren't the only one misconstruing the whole Kane-Okposo thing. I was referencing you and a few other people that I saw do the same thing (you probably thought I was only referencing you). That's why I commented. Glad you cleared it up.

No problem man, it's all good.

Oh yeah, one last thing about Okposo... he's money on SO's. Not Frans Nielsen level money (no one is), but still money. :)

It seems to be an annual signing bonus. So a buyout in 2021 would still have whatever is left.

Happy with it.

6 is better than I thought they'd have to go.
