Him and Tage Thompson really deserve better
??

Do you mean money wise? Both are doing perfectly fine and right at market value. Thompson less so if he has a repeat of last season but he still wasn't a sure-fire superstar when he signed.

Do you mean in terms of their team? Sabres look primed to become eastern powerhouses along with NJD just as the previous powers are on the way down.

Do you mean living in the city of Buffalo? in that case you're probably right :P

Non top 5D in the league should not be making 11M

Makar, Fox, McAvoy, all are a lot under 11M and are better then him, but they signed under lower cap.

Dahlin ceiling is lower than Malar and Fox but probably better than McAvoy

He still needs to improve to be worth 11M
Dahlin was 8th in Norris voting this year, ahead of McAvoy and 8 votes away from 6th.

He is borderline top 5 D, and with the expected increases in the salary cap over the next two to three years, I fully expect we see 11m be the going rate for an average #1D, let alone one who is 22 with the highest upside of any defensemen in the NHL.

Saying his ceiling is lower than Fox is just insane.

You do get that owners are expanding so much to get that extra expansion fees, right? NBA doesn't have 32 teams.. They don't have a good TV deal in the U.S so they make that up by expanding.
MLS is catching up.
Ummm okay.

In 2000 ABC/ESPN agreed to pay 120,000,000 a year for the rights
In 2010 NBC agreed to pay 200,000,000 a year for the rights
in 2020 ESPN agreed to pay 400,000,000 a year and Turner agreed to pay 225,000,000 a year for the rights

Tragic.

If you remember the question that was answered it was about the NHL's health compared with it's past self, idk what the MLS has to do with it.

You think 225 is a lot? Rogers pays them way more.

Might even lead to a playoff birth

They were one point away last year with Anderson and UPL as their starters. If Levi is the real deal I feel they're more likely to win the presidents trophy this year than being out of the playoffs. They're just as good as the leafs in the east, that roster is elite.

A) Dahlin's contract buys more UFA years (7) than those other contracts did.

B) The cap is higher when Dahlin signed this deal and is expected to go up roughly $4M before this deal kicks in and $8M over the first two years of this deal.

I get why seeing Dahlin getting the second biggest AAV for a D can seem high. But, instead of comparing Dahlin to guys like Makar and Fox, this contract needs to be compared more to guys like Nurse and Jones given the UFA years it bought and the timing of the deals.

Not worth 11M yet but since its full 8 year term the cap will grow, and his play should be top 3 to 5D yearly so cap% wise won't be that bad as he looks to lead the sabres to contention

Thompson and Cozens on great underpays, so a bit of an overpay for Dahlin is fine.

Wonder what Powers gets if he puts 50ish pts this year
How bout that Marner contract though, bet he’s worth every penny eh?

More than a fair deal in my opinion. Cap will go up $20-30M over the next 9 years, he'll be making 10% of the cap by the end which is great for a top defenceman in the league.

Owen Power looks at Sanderson's deal, and Dahlin's deal, plays the year and gets 50 pts and then commands $9-10M next offseason.

If Power gets 9 that’s 20 per for those two. Are there any other teams with two D taking 20 on their cap?

Anyone else of a certain age see people comment on 11 million being too much and realize 25 years ago there were players making more when revenues were 1/8th what they are today?
It's time for players to stop being nice and push for more $. Bobby Holik 21 years ago got 9 million per...
I get there's a "Cap" but still;..

You're literally comparing apples to oranges of a cap world vs. a no cap world. Star players got truckloads of money 25 years ago because teams could back up the BRINKS truck with no limit, but the Average Joe in the NHL was making jack shit.

In '98 Fedorov was the highest paid player at $14M. Sounds great, right? Until you realize #5 was Mats Sundin... At only $6.3M. In the current league, $6.3M doesn't get you in the top 100.
