They're going to sink or swim with their young wingers at some point, I get that.

I just figured Buchnevich had more value than that. Although you have to keep in mind, that's *one year* Buchnevich.

In a vacuum, I don't hate trading Buchnevich for jam but Blais is not who I would have targeted. He kinda just sucks. The best thing about him is that he's won a Cup. We're overvaluing the "know how to win" thing because of those two Islanders games.

I think the mindset of this trade makes sense, it's the execution that is wanting.

As we've discussed, the reality is that for better or worse Kakko and Kravtsov are our apparent future at RW.

Likewise, signing Kreider and upcoming contracts meant Buch was a prime trade candidate.

Finally, we all knew that we were looking at moves that included trading finesse scoring talent for different skill sets, and most likely trading top six talent for combinations based around middle and bottom six talent.

All of that is understood.

The problem is the value.

I think if you trade Buch for a first and Blais, it's a little more palatable. Or if you trade Buch for a pair of guys who fit specific roles (defensive specialist on the wings and a guy who takes faceoffs) --- okay we're filling holes and needs.

But this just feels like us reacting, badly, to what we think we need and paying premiums for it.

Giordano only has a year or two left at his level, but he's a good player. Most of the guys in the Kraken defenseman pile aren't very good, if it's them.
My concern is wasted value. In a vacuum, I like Giordano and I think he’s a good fit for us. But, like this Buch deal, we’d be leaving value on the table solely for the sake of addressing a hole…

In theory, that also sounds like a prudent idea. But players like Blais and Giordano should be able to be acquired for less than Buch and Strome, respectively.

More moves are definitely on the radar.

I think for better or worse Drury has vision for what he wants the bottom six to be and I think he's going to make some of those Amonte for Matteau/Noonan type moves we've discussed on here.

The concern for me right now is that Drury, from most reports, has kind of taken an isolationist approach thus far. Maybe that works for him. We will see.
An isolationist approach? Like in not listening to his team and doing things based on his gut?

It's ironic because I'm sort of defending him, and I'm the one who won't like it, but a lot of you will like Blais.

He's very, very noticeable. There's going to be a "Blais effect" and he's going to get credit for things he had nothing to do with. People will claim "the team plays an inch taller" and there's going to be a game this season that he misses which we lose because the other team's goalie posts a .985 and people will say "see, this is the team without Blais!"
Don't get me wrong. I REALLY like Sammy Blais. He will make the game fun to watch. But the value of this deal will forever outweigh what he brings to the table.

I have lost a lot of confidence here after this Buch trade. That was maybe worse than any trade Gorton made over his entire tenure here.

All this team should have done is just kept steering the rebuild. You can get Goodrow for a 7th to toughen up a bit? Fine.

But we are about to go off the god damn rails just to try to win with Kreider-Panarin-Zibanejad.

It's f***ing embarrassing. Those three are not good enough to be the core of a Cup champion.

Build around Kakko and Laf morons!

Moving players around only works if you are getting fair value. Buch maybe would have signed for just 2 mil a year over what Goodrow did.

You make room for youngsters I get t it, but considering the deal we had tabled for Kreider, I think we dealt the wrong winger in retrospect, and I know that’s a common sentiment here.

No actually because Blais helps us immediately our bottom 6 has been dogshit for a while. A late 1st in this draft? We’re lucky if it becomes Sammy Blais 4 years from now.

I wanted more for Buch (Thomas) but people severely overvalue draft picks
It would have been the pick after ours which isn't a late first.

I really wonder what Gorts would've gotten for Buch
What did he get for McDonagh and Miller? I mean the trade is absolutely underwhelming but I don't know that it's a given that there was the opportunity to get much--if anything--more than he did.

And yeah we could have held onto him until the TDL, but what do you do then? Trade him when we're hopefully in a playoff race and he's a big part of it?

Trade sucks but maybe the market for Buchnevich wasn't what we would expect it to be.
