Foligno golfing.

Nick Foligno is a lifetime loser just like Joe Thornton.

FOURTEEN (14) years in the league and he’s advanced to the second round exactly ONCE. Although I suppose that’s once more than the Leafs have advanced.

Expecting lifetime losers like Foligno and Thornton to “show the way” is laughable.

They’ve spent their entire careers underachieving in the post season with disappointing early round folds.

There ought to be a little extra something something in Nick Foligno's contract when he signs with Columbus on July 28th. He kept quiet about the bad back and performed his role of fleecing Dubas perfectly. He even got eliminated in the 1st round which was an added bonus to get back to his family quicker.

Islanders really don't have the cap space to do that. Sorokin, Pelech and Beauvillier all need new contracts next year and Cizikas is a UFA. Their cap situation is a mess and that's with Boychuk "retiring" and giving away Toews for peanuts. It'll be interesting to see how Sweet Lou handles it.
They also utilized their cap to build a balanced roster, similar to the Bruins roster.
Not one player making more than $7m.
We will never be able to add a quality supporting cast (bottom 6) as long as we are Matthew’s, Marner and Tavares are making $11m+.

It's interesting how big a disconnect there is between how much Leaf fans have laughed at NYI since we signed Tavares and how much more success NYI has had since compared to us.

Thought experiment - if we could trade our organization for theirs going back to since the day Tavares was signed, who would go for it? That includes all asssets, draft picks, the coach and GM and so on.

Obviously the last few years have rocked for them and sucked for us, winning playoff rounds is always fun. So the only question is - are we better positioned than they are to win the cup as it stands today? If there's not good reason to think that we have a better shot at the cup than they do in say the next 5 years than the decision is easy, I'd take their organization in a heartbeat. But maybe we're still better positioned for the future than they are?

This is an example of where I question Dubas’ “analytics” or at least how he applies them

Both Leo and Matt Martin enjoy regular shifts in the post season on a final 8 team... again.

but not good enough for ours?
How nice would it have been to have Martin and someone like clutterbuck and even Leo on our 4th line these playoffs? In the end Joe and Wayne were bad choices, and I like both those guys but they are just done like dinner.

Toews was obviously expendable in New York. We still haven't replaced what we lost when we moved Kadri.

The only thing the Leafs gained by replacing Kadri with Tavares was an extra $6.5m of salary.

Although the pyjama photo op was a cute PR gimmick.

There are certain realities that come with decisions. It seems Dubas is ignoring that just to be right in I can do what I said. Consequences be damned.

If we didn’t sign Tavares then:

Matthews 11 - Marner 11
Kadri 4.5 - Nylander 7
33.5 is a viable course.

But we signed Tavares and right from the start we said one of Marner/Nylander should be moved. Then we have Marner 11 and with Nylander at 7 started stripping off any quality support and are seeing the ramifications.

We committed to a 1-2 punch down the middle. That changes the scope.

Now we should have:

Matthews 11 - Winger at 5
JT 11 - Nylander 7
34 million

See how it is in structure with the Matthews/Kadri above. Things have to change. You need a solid tip 9 and need to be able to spend 10 million on it.

You are spending half the cap on 4 forwards in the top 6 and haven’t even spent money yet on competent 2nd wingers to flank the 4. The depth is finished.

Then a solid D and 2 goalies.
Dubas just ignored that fact and is stuck trying to stick his fingers in the dam.

This was Dubas' answer to adding grit and being harder to play against. Bogo was solid though. We need grit and energy that is not past it's best before date.

Bog was a great pick up imo and Brodie was also but yea to think that Joe and Wayne were going to add the elements we needed was ill advised. I think Dubas felt that these guys know its the end for them so they will give everything they have which in theory sounds good but in reality it was not a good read.

Kadri would have eventually ended up on LW had he not been suspended twice. Nylander should have been moved for Parayko that summer.

Blew it when he turned down Perry who begged to be a Leaf for 750K and went with Simmonds for $1.5m. Water under the bridge now. Wonder if Dubas would tuck his tail between his legs and sign Perry this summer.

You mean the way Sweet Lou tossed Devon Toews overboard? No, Sweet Lou would never do that...

You Lou worshipers would be losing your minds if Dubas gave away a player of Toews caliber like Lou did lmao
If we made it to the 2nd round again and were playing with intensity and fire, nope I would have no problem with it. If Dubas did that and we shit the bed then you are correct.

Guys like Mika and Engvall have the speed a size to play a heavy game, but for some reason do not use their most valuable assets to their benefit.
The rest of the forwards will never deviate from their fly-by soft mode.

Foligno for a 1st instead of Hall for a 2nd doesnt look so good either at the moment though I will say if Foligno could have stayed healthy I think we would have liked what he brings. But Perry and Hall instead of Simmonds and Foligno.....yes please.

Fixed it for you.

And 11 million for Marner is still too much in any scenario. But you see the balance I am going for. Around 30-34 million is enough for a core 4 forward to build the team.

Yeah but I cannot blame Dubas because his management team decided they wanted Foligno. IMO they were so focused on Foligno that they ignored Hall and overpaid to get Foligno deal done. Thankfully this is a weak draft by all accounts.

Marner should have come in around Ranta money or the Point bridge.

Matthews at his AAV for 5 years is another mistake. Now we are 2 years away from having to deal him or overpay him once again. It goes on and on.

Did that actually happen? Verified? Simmonds was a fine signing but I 100% would have rather had Perry than Thornton even at time of signing.

Foligno at 1.375 cap hit vs. Hall at 4.0 cap hit.

Boston's team make-up allows them to add a guy like Hall. Toronto needed a guy like Foligno.
