Still see a need at 3rd line RW. A skill guy who can shoot the puck.

Solid move by Sweeney. Columbus asking for the moon for Gavrikov might’ve really screwed themselves.

Still think we see a Bonino type add at the last minute. If a center goes down, Fredric slots in, and his struggles at the face off dot are well known.
Zacha would slot in at center before Freddy would

And Gavrikov was more of the same not very physical

I'm all for identifying the players you want and then paying for them, but it sure feels like a last shot type move.

This trade feels too good to be true and it's worrying me.

Where is the I'm scared dude?
It's a lot to give up (basically a whole draft - 1st/2nd/3rd) for rentals.

I wanted an enforcer, but I am not sure Hathaway is that. I think he comes off like a goon at times. I REALLY want him to prove me wrong.

This trade looks good.

I want to like Hathaway....It is up to him
If anything he'll add to the need for an enforcer - stirring the pot more than he sips from it.

IF they win the Cup, what does it matter? Is there ANY guarantee those draft picks would pan out? Are you going to tell me that we could be sacrificing future Stanley Cup championships by trading these pics?

A refresher on Bruins history - there are NEVER ‘future Stanley Cup championships’ with this franchise. One Cup in the last 50 years (2011), and three since BEFORE Pearl Harbor (1970; 1972; 2011).

Remember all those Cups we thought the 2011 Bruins were going to win? Neither do I.

WIN NOW AT ANY COST. Because we have no idea when the next one is coming!

Win now for obvious reasons...could care less about rental cost. Bruins may resign those rentals but with Sweens at the helm are you all that worried?
Nope, just saying if you think it's too good to be true just remember what it cost. Could also remember the last time Boston loaded up for the playoffs by dealing a similar package to Washington for an D/F combination in Gonchar and Nylander.

That IF is doing a whole lot of work here.

So he got his ass kicked in negotiations and is now whining about it. Sounds like Harbaugh and the "not knowing" the rule book situation.
Yeah, I don’t understand the whining either. The jackets surely were aware of the bruins cap situation. The bruins needed to make another deal before they could do the one with Columbus. Columbus refused to take smith (or any money) back in the deal. Don’t understand how they can feel “duped” at all. Jarmo played hardball and Sweeney just went in another direction.

Would be interesting to know if CBJ refused to take on Craig Smith's contract or not. I know it's been speculated that trying to find a taker for Smith's contract was the hold up on closing the CBJ Gavrikov deal.

Because if they refused to take it on, then you can't blame Sweeney for moving on the Washington deal that clearly included dumping Smith's contract.

Then factor in the Bruins got the superior player in Orlov AND filled a need with Hathaway.

CBJ will find a taker for Gavrikov no doubt. They may even get a 1st rounder out of the acquiring team.

But he (Kekalainen) wouldn't be the first GM to overvalue his deadline UFAs and find themselves taking a lesser deal last minute just to get something back.

Elliot Friedman on today's 32 Thoughts Podcast, explaining the Gavrikov situation:
"I have absolutely no doubts the reason why Columbus scratched Gavrikov is because they had a deal in place with the Boston Bruins. In their eyes it was more than just we will do something, there was some sort of verbal commitment there."

-Gavrikov getting impatient, wanted a deal to happen soon
- Boston views it as they never had a verbal commitment
- Had conceptual talks with Columbus
- Boston had legitimate talks with Arizona on Chychrun
- Had talks with Chicago on a McCabe/Lafferty deal
- Earlier Thursday, Columbus heard a deal wasn't going to happen
- Columbus and Boston had very different opinions on where they thought the deal was
- GMs around the league thought Gavrikov to Boston was done
Too bad, so sad. Columbus shouldn't have dragged their feet, they should have
helped the Bruins make the $$$ work. They probably figured that Gavrikov would've played the rest of the year here and bolted, maybe back to them. Sweeney burst their bubble. When you get the deal that you essentially want, and it comes down to giving just a little bit to finish it off, you've got to shit or get of the pot! Columbus didn't.
