There's no point in having EP as 'untouchable', then trading his similar aged top winger, who only costs $.

Kuz will have trade value on a bridge as well if he's a 30-35g guy, so could still be moved later if we go scorched earth.

I think you mean if I believe the media...
or what JR and his flunkey leak to the media. I don't think Fridge made it up. I think until Demko started poorly there are probably 3 untouchables, now maybe only Petey. The big problem isn't who and who isn't tradable as opposed to untouchable, it's all the crappy contracts that the previous regime and the current regime seems like to give out. They better do household cleaning as best they can because unless they can trade a stinker contract or buy some out they will remain in cap hell for awhile. Bo can probably fetch them more than Miller last year, other than that you are looking at what are thought to be core pieces if you want return on trades. That is why the Miller resigning makes no sense, now you are stuck with that contract.

NO $HIT.
I cannot believe there are people here and elsewhere who think that adding another $6M+ player is the answer.
MAXIMIZE TRADE RETURN FOR ALL UFAS.
But maximize is the key word. Kuz can walk, or they can give him what he wants. They don't know where they will finish or where they will draft. Top heavy draft of wingers and centres, so what is offered could determine what they want to do. If they can trade BB then maybe take a chance and resign Kuz, but generally I agree, just trade whatever UFA's you have for as much as you can and maybe add Brock in a trade with Bo, if a team was getting two players they thought might push them over the top, then maybe they make that based on the history of the two players playing together. Probably only Bo. Should have traded Miller at the deadline this year with Bo in a separate trade and reaped the rewards, but no. He who shouldn't be named legacy still hangs over this team.

Very little so far has been leaked from the team. Its why 99% of the moves come from no where. Most of what we hear seems to be coming from agents and people outside the organization.

They can keep Boeser and Garland if they move Horvat. They will also hopefully be moving Myers in the summer. If they can get primo assets for Kuzmenko they absolutely should do that as well.

Scoring wingers are not hard to find.

We already have wingers in BB, Miller, Mikheyev and Garland on multiyear contracts they are not outperforming. And all our legit prospects are wingers..

Lets not add a 7x7 to that pile.
Kuz is on pace for 73 points. There were only 23 wingers last season that scored more than 70 points. Also only 2 of them was signed as a FA by their current team.

Easy to find eh?

Wait there’s under 15 minutes left in the third, cue Canucks realizing they actually need to win a hockey game.

This might be Boeser's worst season in the NHL so far. I have no idea if it's the injuries that have taken their toll, or whether the league has simply gotten a lot quicker. Probably a combination of both.

But those harping on the Miller signing, should contemplate the cap room the Canucks would have right now if they'd traded Boeser instead of extending him?

Kuzmenko has more than made up for his production, and they'd easily have enough money to re-sign Horvat.

Hope they will trade Kuzmenko. Yeah it's fun to watch him and Pettersson together but I want to see him in playoffs. If he loves Vancouver that much he can return in the offseason, I doubt any playoffs team will be able to resign him anyway.

First. Yes. Signing Brock to this extension looks like a big mistake now. The guy is just never healthy and he is slow, and his skating seems to come and go from game to game. I'm guessing its a back issue but it doesn't really even matter at this point, its always something.

But the logic of signing him to a lesser cap hit but longer term, to try to rebuild his value, I can totally see. It fits with where this team is at as they wont be competing for anything for the duration of his extension. Also the wing market had not quite cratered to the point it did during the summer with Max Pax and Bjorkstrand getting traded for nothing.

It almost 100% looks like a failed bet.

When Miller was signed, winger market had cratered. So they did 2 or 3 mistakes at once:
Not realising Miller is a wing OR realising Miller is a wing and still paying him this retirement contract
Not realising what this team is OR ignoring very basic aging curves for NHL players. (I don't count the current season as him aging. He still has a really solid acceleration that makes him a very effective F1 in addition to his elite PP playmaking)

Not a chance he comes back if he's traded at the deadline.

If he's traded he likely goes to a better team with a better culture, why the hell would he come back after experiencing that.

If you're not going to rebuild, and you see him as a good player for 5-6 years (which he probably will be), then just sign him. Get rid of cap elsewhere, and don't make excuses.

I can never figure out if this is the Boeser thread or the Kuzmenko thread. But anyway...

Just to reiterate my previous post, you keep this player. Especially if you're retooling and not rebuilding... you keep this player.

He has chemistry with the guy you want to build around and is an asset on a top unit powerplay. My man has a nose for the net, the skill to make and finish plays, the IQ to know where to go/be/put the puck. You don't just *find* these players (I mean yes we kind of did, but it's obviously the exception).

I am a proponent of the build through the draft strategy but there's a line.

Yes he's not "young" by NHL standards these days but he's not old enough that he's going to fall off a cliff within the next 3-4 years. Not to mention it's his first year in the NHL/North America, so there may even be more "there" once he gets more comfortable and confident.

Sign him to a fair contract and chances are he will hold his value. Even if the retool turns out to be an utter disaster, you'll still get good value on him in 2 years or whatever.

Of course, find a way to dump Boeser first because Kuzmenko has made him completely redundant, not to mention Boeser's own lackadaisical play. Don't want to hear this "well we've been trying to create cap space" garbage from management. Either get it done or GTFO.

Ya that would be typical Canuck style: sign the guy at his highest value then lose him later for nothing.

If you are in a rush you dont keep this player.

You trade him for right-now Dman.

You cannot tie more money in the wings.

It would be contingent on getting rid of some winger salary elsewhere.

Which quality D-man in the age range we are looking for is available right now anyway?
I'm not sure.

You probably have to be less picky because of the time constraint of competing right now.

I guess a move where you trade Kuz for the highest pick possible then trade that pick to a rebuilding team for one of their Dmen who is not in the time frame for their contention window?

I look forward to the relentless “let’s trade our wingers for a good Center” fantasy trade proposals from the re-tool bros once Horvat is gone.

what do you mean? there's some really good centers available on the free agent market this summer

jonathon toews, ryan o'reilly, dylan larkin, sean monahan. maybe even bo horvat will be available if the team is lucky!

re-tool bros

More like reality bro, because I too want a proper rebuild but nothing I say can change that.

So we do our best to play the cards we are dealt.

But yes, we will need another good center once Horvat is gone. I never liked Sutter but it's clear we've lacked a checking center since his departure.

Not that I see how any of this is relevant to signing Kuzmenko.

I'm still holding out hope that this team will be in shambles from the Bo trade and no one will want to trade them a good dman for their pricey wingers so I'm hoping they suck enough again next year for someone else from the Aquillini family to step in and call for a rebuild or defer to JR who hopefully has the brains/balls/patience to rebuild. That's really our best hope here.

Because a re-tool that starts off by trading Horvat sounds dumb as shit to me.

It makes sense to keep Horvat for a retool. It doesn't make sense to pay Horvat an inflated salary because he's gone HAM in his contract year. Gotta bite the bullet, especially after they prioritized Miller.

Not ideal, but these are the circumstances.

And yeah, I really don't know where the D-men we need will come from in such short order. This is likely where the retool fails barring a few rabbits out of the hat.

So we'll see if this management team can walk the walk.
