Seravalli: Broberg/agent requesting a trade (mod: title updated, Oilers didn’t give permission to Broberg to seek a trade)

Saw him play in Skellefteå and I can see why scouts ranked him around Söderström and Heinola. The problem is that he was taken well above where he was supposed to go.

Still though. In Sweden he was good defensively and was great on his skates with vision and nice passing. He went to Edmonton and within a year all of that was gone. That's why I'm wondering if this is more of an Oilers problem or a drafting problem or both.

Right now it looks like both but with a heavy lean on bad development. Because Broberg should still be a 4-6th D in the NHL.
I saw him play there as well. I live in Europe and to Sweden and Finland 2 or 3 times a year to watch different teams. I only watched Broberg because every told me he was like Klefbom. He was nothing like Klefbom.

I bumped up the Value of Broberg thread a few weeks ago. It's probably in his best interest to be moved, especially with Desharnais playing better. I wish the player all the best and am shocked we didn't give him an appropriate shot. Lack of playing time, benchings after one mistake and being yo-yo'd to the minors probably ruined his confidence.
That was my thread.

I still think he has a ton of promise and shows all the signs of a late bloomer. Maybe to much expected of him to short without the insulating presence of a quality vet on his pairing.

He must be making some terrifying mistakes if *EDM* would bench him for making a mistake on D.

When Woodcroft was here, accountability only applied to a handful of players. Broberg made one mistake in his last game with Woody in the second after making a smart play and got benched. Certain forwards and Broberg would feel the ire a lot more than others.

I'm confused what went so wrong for him.

He obviously has some holes in his game but he's big, great skater and decent offensively. I would have imagine he would at least compete for a job in the NHL with those skills alone.

I guess not though I think the habs should take a flyer on him for the rest of the season. If he's good, keep him as depth for the young Ds to compete with, if not, get rid of him.

So far he hasn’t demonstrated a head for the game.

Hmm, how about something like:

Wahlstrom and Aho for Broberg and Gagner?

I think that works for Edmonton's salary cap limitation. Added Aho and Gagner to open up the roster positions. Gagner gives us bottom 6 center protection and Aho gives Edmonton a LHD with experience as depth.

I can't see the Habs having much to offer. Edmonton wants a player back, they can't take any cap on, and I believe they'd be after a forward.

He's also had some injury problems and is buried by depth at LD right now.

I feel bad for McDavid and Draisaitl. Holland is completely running the Oilers into the ground.
Truth but the Oilers have been run into the ground since well before that.
I don't think there's a franchise, in the last two decades, with the combination of drafting/development and asset management as bad as the Oilers.
The Broberg pick in the first place, development of the player or lack thereof and deterioration of his asset value waiting at least a year too long to deal him is the most recent example of this. Just another day in Oil Country.

Another ruined Oilers prospect... I had high hopes for Broberg. I can see him bouncing back if traded though. He's got the talent and work ethic
Skating is his only talent and he doesn't even look that fast anymore. He's the Puljujarvi of defensemen.
