How long before JW is named captain?

Seriously, players at this level are thoroughly coached in the Xs and Os. They really just need to be led, and to be pushed to be the best version of themselves. I have confidence Brindy can get this done. If Roddy can fix the leadership issue and introduce real accountability, I think that's a win.

He's won half the battle already with how excited the club seems to be about his hiring. This game is about far more than systems. If Rod is a little lacking in that area, so what. If he can get the guys to care and hate losing half as much as he does, we'll be fine.

Are you kidding me with that article, THH? Dur dur Rod's a good leader, don't underestimate him!

AMO with the solid Peter principle reference.

I mean, Rod IS a good leader. Surely you're not questioning that?

The article makes a decent point about how he was working within constraints imposed upon him by Peters, so the results aren't exactly "owned" by one guy. It's not a bad point, especially when backed by specific references as opposed to our general speculation about what we think might possibly be going on behind the scenes where none of us have any sources.

"Rod is the greatest leader in the history of this franchise, and has earned the opportunity to take charge of our locker room," Waddell said in a statement. "We spoke to a number of candidates for this position, but our conversations with staff and players consistently returned to the same person.

"Rod's fresh ideas, ability to motivate and understanding of what it takes to bring a championship to Raleigh will help our young team take the next step toward competing to bring the Cup back to North Carolina."

If Rod has 'fresh ideas' that people liked but were never implemented, this fits the narrative of Peters maybe having some tunnel vision in terms of how this team was going to play on the ice. Also interesting that the Staff and Players allegedly really liked Rod as a head coach candidate. I don't remember hearing about any staff or players losing sleep in regards to Peters leaving.

paging @Lempo for analysis of Dundon's choice of rhyming scheme with this hype tweet

For what it's worth, Nathan Gerbe liked that tweet. A guy that's not even part of the team anymore is excited about Brindamour as a coach.

It does lead credence to the idea that many were calling for him to take a head coaching job.

Sounds familiar. I guess this is why Peters and Francis were "on the same page" so thoroughly. Neither of them listened to anybody's input.

I wouldn’t call it a fluff article. He names some pretty specific situations where Brind’Amour took a necessary back seat to other leaders in the organization, then stepped forward and thrived when given the opportunity.

Reading behind the lines a little bit, I suspect Brind'Amour went into his conversation with Dundon with a list of things he disagreed with Peters on but had to do, why what Peters was doing was wrong, and how he would fix it. Sounds like the Captaincy thing was one of those things as well, so time to reopen that speculation. I also suspect that Dundon's conversations with players ($10 on Williams being pivotal here) in the exit interviews played a big role. If the players are saying that Peters was telling them to do this thing and Brind'Amour seemed to hate it, if they say that Brind'Amour was pushing them but Peters took the pressure off, or whatever that dynamic was- they're in a position to know which coaches are doing what. Especially somebody like Williams where he's basically a player-coach and has a relationship with Rod where Rod can tell him a lot more of the coaching staff dynamics than any other player. Dundon has that information, we don't.

I think Luke's piece is about where my thinking is at the moment. There are risks here- big ones. But if there's anyone in hockey who can rise to the challenge when finally given the head job, it's Rod Brind'Amour.

From what I can tell Peters was definitely not a "players coach" where from what we know Brindy is. Whatever happens can't be any worse than watching Peter's brand of possession snooze-fest hockey

Who cares if he's a player's coach? That was what Muller was described as once.

I only care about competence. Past results of Brindy coaching and Waddell GMing doesn't look great for that. Who knows though.

DABDA. I'm in the last stage now myself. Not much anybody can do about it now. The franchise made their bed and we'll all have to sleep in it. Maybe we'll finally kill the bed bugs.
