I mean, Rod IS a good leader. Surely you're not questioning that?

The article makes a decent point about how he was working within constraints imposed upon him by Peters, so the results aren't exactly "owned" by one guy. It's not a bad point, especially when backed by specific references as opposed to our general speculation about what we think might possibly be going on behind the scenes where none of us have any sources.

Certainly not questioning his leadership. Look, I love the guy. He's why I converted from a Philly to a Canes fan. He's a surefire HoFer in my mind. Do I think he is going to coach this team over the edge? No. I want more than anything to have to eat crow.

once it became more clear we weren't going to go outside the organization, vellucci was the pick for me considering his success behind the bench at other stops. i would have liked to have seen a search outside the organization for coach as well, but we had an internal option there that wouldn't have been a trainwreck.

I just don't understand how you can say, on day one, that Brindy as HC is any more of a trainwreck than Vellucci might have been.

Remember how excited some of us were when we stole Montreal's heir apparent head couch away? Look at how mad Montreal fans are that we stole wunderkind coach Kirk Muller! This is gonna be a big win! New blood from outside the org! Proven AHL winner!

Nope. Trainwreck. I dunno.

I will say this: I'm glad the decision is made.

lolwut, this is a complete and utter exaggeration. Some people might have been excited we were getting a new coach from outside of the organization given how Maurice 2.0 ended but no one thought he was a proven AHL winner. He had all of 17 games of head coaching experience at the AHL level. No head coaching experience anywhere else.

At least Vellucci had won quite a bit in the OHL and a lot more head coaching experience.

A reminder from the past that maybe this was the plan all along:

Coach Kirk Muller fired by Carolina Hurricanes in first of major moves

"Not too fresh, though. Assistant coach Rod Brind’Amour will remain part of the coaching staff, which sets up an interesting situation. His name has been tossed around as a possible successor to Muller, but he lacks the head coaching experience to be sold as the best possible option to a fan base that's dwindling after five consecutive playoff no-shows. The bigger issue, though, might be the impression of "same ol' same ol'" that such a promotion would create. It's tough to sell tickets with that hanging around your neck."

He's right in one extent though. IIRC, the view on Muller was overall positive, that we hired a guy from the outside, got a guy that was thought to be one of the best up and coming coaches in the game, he was said to be an excellent assistant coach in MTL, etc.... Even though his pro head coaching experience was minimal, many people were very thrilled by the hiring, and in the end, it failed. I seem to remember I liked the hire at the time.

I mean, there's no guarantee that Brind'Amour would be a train wreck, but I'm in the same boat that I would have preferred the guy with the established successful track record that's currently guiding what we're hoping makes up a large part of our future core to a division final bid in the Calder Cup Playoffs, with that series at 1-1 after taking game 2 on the road.

I don't know if this is going to be the best offseason in ages, or the worst, but it's going to be the most interesting for sure.

I mean this is one of the most interesting offseason any team has had in recent memory.

Evidence: I listen to 4-5 hockey podcasts (1.5 hr commute each way) on a daily/weekly basis, and we are actually getting talked about. Dundon. Francis. Waddell. Dudley. Peters. The Lottery. Now Brind’Amour. It’s nuts.

you're probably right. it's just the frustration of the lack of a new voice behind the bench. we should obviously give rod a chance to prove what he can do now that the move has been made, but it just feels like we needed a new voice regardless.

I was leaning Vellucci too, fwiw. But I think it's no tragedy, is all.

The downside is that we know he's gonna get fired one day. The upside is that he'll get his shot.

it's not allowing me to change your user name, sorry.
As a raised Lutheran I am deeply offended by his promotion of the Catholic deathly sin of Anger, and wish it changed to something more agnostic.

Also I'm constantly reminded of ex-coworker's teardown of an early 2000's Metallica album.
