Re: Andreoff

Some guys can excel in the minors yet when they make the jump to the big leagues not only does their productivity drop but some players just don’t perform at all. For a player like JHS you can ascribe it to work ethic and attitude. For many others in this group they’re just not good enough, e.g. MDC.

Whether it’s NCAA mens hoops and the jump to the NBA or AAA to MLB I could rattle off a bunch of flat out stars in one league that were outclassed at the next level.

That’s Andreoff in a nutshell and frankly he’s no superstar in the AHL.

at the very least...he'll make pretty good depth in case of injury.

He and Koivula seem the likely 4th line center options should Casey miss a longer stretch of games.

But I don't really see either filling any other role on the team unless we get hit bad by the injury bug.

Koivula is hurt and missed a bit of camp, I wouldn't be surprised if his contract was terminated at some point this season and he went back to Finland. Andreoff and Bardreau are better bottom six call up options than him and Raty/Holmstrom and maybe even Iskhakov/Dufour have already leaped him on the depth chart as far as prospects go. He's much closer to Bellows/Dal Colle than I want to admit it.

You've jestingly mentioned in the past that you should be the GM, but if I were the GM, I'd have long since looked to flip Koivula.

He's one of those guys who, for several seasons now, just hasn't looked like he'd never be a real option here, yet he's had several AHL seasons where, in conjunction with his serious size and improved skating, he likely boosted his value as a trading chip in a package or someone you move to rehash a pick.

But that's just me.

We're fine at adding these Andreoff, Bardreau, and now Fasching types to the organization to create depth for pinches and/or injuries.

There's never been anything jestingly about it. :sarcasm:

Also Koivula has no value, unless you are inferring a swap of AHL bodies.

I felt he had value at various junctures the past few years.

Thus, why I wrote "I would have long since flipped him." ;)

That time has passed and he's little more than a depth option for the organization now.

But what's his status exactly - like just now?

I see he's played 5 games and has three points. Eliteprospects doesn't list him as having an injury.

Isles with a 5-3 win over the Wolfpack.
Bolduc 1G 1A
Ish 3A
Durandeau 2G 1A
Dufour 1G
Bolduc & Ish still racking up points
Team is winning and that’s wonderful but with that being said I’m not sure Dufour and Raty will be ready next year this time let alone this year. If the big 4 had to be ranked at this moment the pecking order would be

1. Ruslan Ishkakov

2. Simon Holmstrom

3. Aatu Ratay
4. Will Dufour

And I’ve watched every game so far this year. Every minute of every game To be exact.

My $0.02 -

I never want to see Andreoff at the NHL level with the Isles. Great guy to have in the AHL supporting the kids but, if he is going to get a shot with an NHL team, let it be with a bottom feeder like Arizona or Chicago.

I am pleasantly surprised by Ish so far and hope he keeps it up. I am rooting for him and, if he makes it, that would be great. Especially since the very limited times I saw him in college with UConn, he was like the 3rd or 4th best forward on the ice. Big strides so far.

Bolduc looked very good at the end of last season. In the couple games I saw he was extremely engaged and often seemed to be talking to AHL vets and trying to improve in-game. Great sign.

Let's hope he can stay healthy and, other than that, he just needs to continue playing with an edge. That seems to be the knock on him and I can't blame him for being a bit passive in juniors, he was essentially a man playing against kids. He opted not to be a pr!ck like Braden Schneider and not run children.

Holmstrom is close and should be a solid third liner, at a minimum. He might be the next Bailey, in a good way, at a low cost. That works.

Raty and Dufour will be fine and they can percolate in the AHL until ready, but I could also see them get a cup of coffee at the NHL level and, even if they struggle a little, it won't hurt them at all.

Durandeau has a real shot to be a solid, if unspectacular, energy player at some point. Just seems to stand out when on the ice with a smart or hustle play.

Hoping to go to the Bridgeport game tomorrow afternoon.

Assuming the AHL website is updated, Iskhakov is tied for the lead league in points and only has one PPG.

That's fine. The Islanders can afford to be patient with guys like Dufour and Raty when you have guys like Durandeau, Holmstrom, Iskhakov, even Liukas producing. It's not like there's going to be a lot spots open next season or even the year after that.

Exactly. No need to rush the kids. Dufour is 20 and Raty is just turning 20 this month I believe.

I would like to see Salo take Cholowski's spot in the lineup. Cholo has not impressed from what I've seen on AHL.TV

It is very impressive what these young Isles are doing. Raty and Dufour playing as underaged at this level and producing. Holmstrom may never be a scorer but the writing on the wall is that he is an NHLer.

The Ish and Bolduc starts have been huge! Ish tied for the league lead with one less game and Bolduc at 21! A point behind the league lead for D.

If these 2 actually turn out to be top 6 and top 4 d - this prospect pool, which has been written off as abysmal (including me) looks to have softened the blow of missing out on 1st rounders the last 3 seasons and striking out on Bode Wilde.

Since you have watched every game can you tell us if you think that Ish success in the AHL will make it in the NHL given his small size?

Salo definitely needs minutes somewhere.

Thanks to all providing updates in this thread. Been unable to follow for a while and it's terrific to hear about the progress many are making.

Bolduc's return to form + improvemnet is a really big story. The kid is huge, and has the athleticism. If he develops his play, he's got a big future. You can't teach 6'4" 220.
I always liked that last quote.

It’s also a good idea to never get too high or too low so I’ll add this regarding Ishakov.

You can’t teach 5’8” 152. :naughty:
