Its gonna be hilarious when all these "anti-burke" fans see whats next. I can see it already, Luongo comes and pushes us into prolonged mediocrity, with Nonis flipping picks here and there, attempting to squeeze in.

This. If they get luongo and don't try and re tool the ****** core they have now. I will be very dissapointed.

I'm wondering what reason they'll give for the firing. If it's the old "we're going in a different direction" sort of thing, doing it 10 days before the season starts doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

Burke was the ultimate treadmill pusher!

He traded for Kessel and paid him top dollar when all you guys had to do was stand pat and collect your consecutive top 3 picks and away you go.

Burke has been making treadmill moves during his whole tenure.

Unless you guys are hiring a complete buffoon, you will be better off.

This.

Not to mention refusal to pay top dollar for free agents while paying Phaneuf 6.5 mil to be a pylon

I am irate at MLSE!!!!!!!!!!! How do they fire a guy who helped craft this new CBA!!!!!!!!

I bet that they were negotiating his contract extension and Burke wanted 5 years and MLSE would only give him 2 or 3 years... Then it got ugly and they decided to axe him...

So Fing stupid!!!! We are going to regret this move for decades....

The only way this makes sense is ownership has a better GM in place with signing of new CBA.

This is the only rational reason for firing Burke now.

Not at all. When he came in, this team had no assets to put on ice. They have decent players signed now, and a good lot of young guys in the minors.

It's got to be over a difference of opinion in how to handle the new CBA and the direction he wanted to take.

Or could be because he's driven the Leafs into the sewer...

Very very odd timing. He must have really ticked off someone.

I guess all this contract extension talk for Burke to complete this disaster he created just wasn't in the cards. j/k :sarcasm:

Apparently the results DO MATTER its as simple as that, and one doesn't have to go looking for scandals and other conspiracy theories required here, as a simple look at the NHL standings is all anyone needs to validate a firing based on merit here, on poor performance..

It's really just that black and white !!!.

Take a look at our roster and prospects before burke was hired and now.

Ur roster is terrible and prospects are just that prospects.
Over value ur talent much?
Remember when teams constantly finish in the bottom of the league they are rewarded with high draft picks which turn into potential superstars. The superstars the leafs have are not winning. Bottom line.
Look at this on the positive side the leafs won't be handy capped by stupid internal trade deadlines and won't have a GM who holds onto a piss poor couch because of friendship. I hope randy is next!

This doesn't add up. At all. Something more to this, maybe more than hockey itself.

Burkes a good man. He'll find another job in the hockey world, and I don't imagine it'll take too long.

Now what? Nonis takes his place like he did in Vancouver haha that's kind of odd.

I have a feeling we're not going to get any concrete answers at the press conference.

We'll come out of it knowing that Burke was fired and Nonis will take over on an interim basis.

Bob McKenzie ‏@TSNBobMcKenzie

Dave Nonis is the next GM of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Unclear whether that is interim or unconditional appointment.

You guys seem really upset for a guy who has done little to improve the team, i figured that Leafs fans would be calling for his head after 4 years of missing the playoffs under his watch and seemingly having no plan going forward. I'm shocked at the reactions here.

Why? All the polls that were created about Burke and whether he has done a good job or not or whether he deserved to be fired were in favor of him...don't ask why, just the way it was.

Me....I see the the man for what he is. His personality type is one that needs attention. Toronto does NOT need the face of the franchise to be a guy in a suit with an untied tie and messy hair.....they need it to be a great hockey player...a leader.. Like they had in Mats Sundin or Doug Gilmour or Darrly Sittler or Borje Salming. Burke was a huge huge failure.

I see this as a very very comforting move. Finally an ownership who has a clue. LOL at this being about Luongo. As if. Who knows what goes on behind closed doors but I don't believe for one second that this firing is about acquiring a 33 year old goalie or not.

Maybe MLSE wants a GM that takes full advantage of the CBA and does whats in the best interest of the organization and not his own personal views. Burke's done nothing while in charge. Hopefully the new guy comes in has a vision. One that incorporates the coach, the system and the players. This guy was a joke.

81pts, 74pts, 85pts, 80pts

still hasn't addressed the two most important slots - #1 centre or #1 goalie - in any meaningful way. (his only progress there a all was a pick he inherited in Reimer who he blocked anyways).

He should have to pay back all the money he has robbed us off while he was here.

Good riddance.

:handclap::handclap::handclap:
What about when he wasn't our GM? Or do you think he was our GM right from the last lockout? People fail to realize when he took over our team, we were so crap . The only reason we were more"competitive" early on is because teams were still adjusting to the new NHL. Burke changed this team completely , not saying he was a perfect GM not at all but the Burke haters are ridiculous. This past season we've been our MOST competitive since the 04 lockout. We were in a playoff spot for majority of the season, yes we failed but thats hardly a GM's fault.

Breaking: MLSE offers GM job back to Burke... but must wear paper bag over his head on opening night.
