His quick retool didn't work, look at the Leafs' depth chat at C and G. Time to go and as he always says when he trades someone

Thank you for the years spent here

A loyal Leaf fan base today got more than "I'm sorry letters in the papers", from Ownership as they got actions as well as MLSE new ownership took control and issued decisions based on accountability for the teams failures on the ice.

I applaud MLSE for their decision and desire to give Leaf Nation better results,as their actions now spoke louder than words.

Its going to take the new GM time to clean up this mess created by Burke, and with only 1/2 a team (13 players) under contract next season they don't need to "Clear the Slate" this time around as that is happening naturally through failed team building of the past regime.

Be careful what you wish for.

This is must be like Christmas for Canuck fans.

I like the move but I don't get the timing. If they wanted to fire him, why not do it before the draft? At least that way, whoever is in charge can draft and make signings/trades his way.

Here's a thought from way out of left field.

He's leaving to take over for Gary Bettman, who is going to announce his retirement after the CBA is made official. :sarcasm:

Toronto is f! What a drama filled sports city. Horrible timinng. What the hell happened?

I know what the hell happened?! This is the worst timing to fire a GM ever, and if its all over a disagreement over Luongo?!?!?!?!!?!

Why fire him now and not after last season? This makes no sense.

McKenzie feels this has more to do with style and approach (him not having a starting goaltender, a crappy team, etc.)

Greg Brady ‏@bradyfan590

I realize this is VERY speculative, but told by a source Randy Carlyle is "not exactly safe". I trust this source impeccably. Wow.

If that is the case, EVERY single Leaf fan should be angry. Ownership meddling is NOT a road to success.

Quoted to emphasize this point.

If that's the reason for his firing I'm going to flip cars.

@SportsnetSpec: Sounds like Burke did NOT want to make Luongo deal, while many in Leafs org did. Burke a principled man.

Good on him if this is true. The canucks are at a disadvantage if they want to trade luongo. If the asking price is too high then dont take a stupid deal.

Its far less about results then it is about continuity for me.

Burke just began a "new" plan. He tried to improve this team quickly, and realized after that it wasn't the right decision.

Then he began making savvy moves. I worry that we'll bring in someone with no or little GM experience, who will be influenced by non-hockey minds.

Is that really worse than what you had, though? What is Burke's pedigree? By my sight, he inherited the bench and bench boss in Anaheim, grabbed the Sedins for Vancouver, and pulled the trigger on the Kessel trade. What else is there?

Let me echo the sentiments of the majority of Leaf Nation by gasping What the F---!

I have that reaction of course, since . . .
- we've heard no rumblings at all and summer is over
- a new CBA has just been signed, we are in what would normally be mid-season, and the club has a million things to do to prepare their team in an incredibly short span of time for next Sat's opener
- it makes no sense to fire someone a day or before the season starts, doubly so if it's a shortened season where all were waiting for a new CBA before major trades, signings, etc.

Something happened, clearly. I am very curious as to what . . . and my first guess is what many have alluded to, which is some big flap/disagreement over the impending/possible Luongo deal.

This bodes . . . poorly.

I don't know how to feel.

I love Burke and thought he would turn it around, but the results haven't been there.

The Kessel deal will always haunt him (we lost that trade everyone, accept it)

should have just waited this out... not ****** one week before the season

He did a lot to improve the team

Like what? Still no #1 center, no #1 goalie and have missed the playoffs the last 4 seasons.
FTR, Tambellini sucks too so don't get on me for being an Oiler fan and saying this but at least there is a bunch of high end talent to work with there.
I'm really not trolling, i'm just curious at the reactions here. You guys have a very loyal fanbase and deserve better than what Burke has given to you. Didn't he promise that this would be a playoff team more than once? It's not like he went full rebuild and the results were expected.
