When a team finishes in the basement 4 years in a row with the same significant pieces missing as before (#1 goalie, #1 Center etc.), a reset button isn't exactly the worst choice.

To be fair, the team had no pieces save maybe Kaberle when Burke arrived and they do have some good pieces now.

I dont understand why burke was not in for a LOU move... unless gillis was asking for the world..

If this was really the conflict I find it ridiculous to fire Burke over it. It's not like Luongo got traded for peanuts and leafs missed out. For all we know the price is too high and a potential deal could be made at a later time as long as Luongo is still a canuck.

Just because rogers came into the fold doesn't mean the board still doesn't consist of a lot of the same people and the same philosophy.

4/6ths of the Board are new people, the only old-guard are Tennenbaum and Lastman, and Tannenbaum had a history of fighting against Peddie/Teachers

You guys seem really upset for a guy who has done little to improve the team, i figured that Leafs fans would be calling for his head after 4 years of missing the playoffs under his watch and seemingly having no plan going forward. I'm shocked at the reactions here.

We're kind of shocked.. Just first reactions. Take it with a grain of salt. I'm freaking out right now to be honest. WOW

He did a lot to improve the team

If Burke is gone, then Luongo is going to cost a Kings ransom.

Say good bye to a couple of the following:

Kadri
Bozak
Rielly
Gardiner
1st
2nd

If this was at the end of last season, I think you would find a lot more support. The timing, at least for me personally (I've mostly neutral towards him for past year and a half), is a big red flag for a team with a history of ownership in-fighting, incompetence, and meddling.

Never liked Burke. The pro-American bias was a little much. McGuire would be a disaster though. Sounds like Luongo is coming here.

Pretty obvious that this move is directly related to Luongo.

Burke wants to ice the best team and has promised playoffs. So to me he wanted Luongo.

The owners have to pay his filthy contract so I assume they werent convinced that Luongo would be worth breaking your bank on..

Normally owners dont meddle with GM moves but when its this long a contract a GM needs to do a good convincing job.. Judging by how Burke deals with people I think he must have pushed too hard.

Its far less about results then it is about continuity for me.

Burke just began a "new" plan. He tried to improve this team quickly, and realized after that it wasn't the right decision.

Then he began making savvy moves. I worry that we'll bring in someone with no or little GM experience, who will be influenced by non-hockey minds.

I could see this being true, Burke hated the front-loaded contracts, which are now illegal.

But would MLSE fire him just because of this?

Yeah, definitely. The owners want what the owners want, and they'll take down anyone in their way.

Would you really mind bozak and a 2nd for Luongo? I'd do that if I were leafs GM and for all you guys know, I just might be in an hour. Let the speculation begin.

A loyal Leaf fan base today got more than "I'm sorry letters in the papers", from Ownership as they got actions as well as MLSE new ownership took control and issued decisions based on accountability for the teams failures on the ice.

I applaud MLSE for their decision and desire to give Leaf Nation better results,as their actions now spoke louder than words.

Its going to take the new GM time to clean up this mess created by Burke, and with only 1/2 a team (13 players) under contract next season they don't need to "Clear the Slate" this time around as that is happening naturally through failed team building of the past regime.

I worry that your/our philosophy of "playing the kids" and "building through the draft" will not be in sync with that MLSE has planned. I reckon we'll see picks traded for veterans now

Holy smoke!

Nonis as interim GM?

Time to let Randy Carlyle go and let Dallas Eakins coach the big team? I think he's ready. They would have to do that over Burkie's dead body, which apparently is no longer an impediment.

Could it be that coaching is the real sub-text here?

This never happened.
