I need to see the reasoning behind this. I am concerned we're going to make a big mistake (high price) in acquiring Luongo. I've been on the Luongo bandwagon for a long time now, but only because I knew Burke wouldn't overpay to get it done. Now, i'm not so sure the new guy will agree with that.

I worry that your/our philosophy of "playing the kids" and "building through the draft" will not be in sync with that MLSE has planned. I reckon we'll see picks traded for veterans now

Granted, but "draft schmaft" much to my personal dislike has been around for decades and well before Burke arrived, so I'm use to that disappointment by now.

A team at the bottom of the NHL standings trading 2 X top 10 1st and high 2nd was all that was required to confirm nothing has changed under the Burke regime. So even if this continues as we expect big bold moves by MLSE to continue to accelerate success by impatient ownership and directed management to produce quick results that really is no different than what we just dealt with.

The standings and draft rankings say otherwise.

Draft rankings mean ****. Our development team has been very promising, largely because of moves Burke made. You need a good farm team with good prospects to build towards future success in the NHL and Burke did that for us. Marlies before Burke was a dumping ground of poor prospects and overage AHLers.

Why would you fire your GM coming out of the lockout just before the season starts?

When you fire a GM you do it at the end of a season so a new guy can come in to sign players, run the draft etc.

There better be a very good explanation for all of this...

Timing of Burke dismissal very odd. He and all brass were at Marlies game last night in Hamilton. Truth will surface. Something fishy.

Here's something I don't get.

Kypreos just said again, "I am hearing the Leafs still have interest in Luongo"

Who's the interest from? WE DON'T HAVE A GM?

The Owners? Nonis? I guess it would have to be one of them

Here's a thought from way out of left field.

He's leaving to take over for Gary Bettman, who is going to announce his retirement after the CBA is made official. :sarcasm:

Funny thing is I had this feeling that Burke was gunning for Commish but I really do not get this move at all. I plan to watch the presser at 1:45 PM EST as maybe it will clarify some of this but really I can only think of two circumstances that happened.

1. Burke refused to trade for Lou while ownership wanted him. Burke being Burke said no and lost his job.

2. Burke and the new owners did not see eye to eye in the making of the new CBA.

Agree on this.

This organization is incredibly embarrassing.

Good!!!

And LOL at the people crying over this on the first couple pages. It's literally funny to see all these losers who love Burke. Completely foolish. I hope these Burke supporters take their fandom elsewhere now that he's gone.

Even if you don't like Burke, if he was fired because he refused to pull the trigger on a trade then owneship has overstepped their boundaries and that is a bad sign for the future.

Brian Burke running his own show will likely be better than any "figurehead" GM that will be appointed.

Why now? Timing is crazy.

1) What happens to Caryle? Short leash I imagine
2) Why not 8 months ago? Why now? Something happened during the lockout negotitations?
3) Did management disagree with him not wanting to go after Luongo or Bernier?

MLSE seems more like a joke to me than the usual.

To me this isn't an apology, its a slap in the face to Leaf fans.

I'm okay with them firing Burke, if they've got substantial reasoning. Not going to say I agree or disagree but we'll leave it there.

However, we just went through a 113 day lockout, in which they could have fired Burke from the start and let a new GM take nearly half a year to implement his own plan. Instead they string us and Burke along, and now we're left with what seems to be zero directin.

Burk sat on his hands while other teams improved at trade deadline. Mostly ahl moves, I sat there frustrated every july free agency just to see burk pick up has beens like connoly!
Nonis is interim GM. He is the best GM out there for the job at this time!
