Great day for Leaf Nation as this has been among the darkest time in Leafs history with the poorest, longest consecutive non playoff streak in team history.

4 years into his tenure and you have a bottom 5 NHL team, would get anyone fired who promised playoff results.

When your teams MLSE execs have to humble themselves and issue public apology letters for the poor results of the team and the GMs performance reflective of that, you know the end is near.

Some very wise people said this season was "Playoffs or Burke or Bust" and that very wise prognostication couldn't have been more accurate.

sorry if I posted this before but have to agree with you there on every terms, I hated burke so much it was unbelivable, so glad he is gone now

I think this has to do with Money nothing else,

This is what I was thinking too.

Perhaps the new ownership doesn't like Burke's $6 millon salary?

I'm not trying to side with the owners, I'm baffled like the rest of us, but some people have to stop jumping off a cliff with 'say goodbye to our first' -- relax!

Also, maybe the owners wanted to bring Luongo in and had no problem PAYING him the money he's owed. And Burke didn't want to bring him in because of the "circumvented deal".

Just a thought.

Hah- it'd be so garbage if he gets hired by another team and picks up our players like what he did to Anaheim

A clear message from ownership that losing will not be tolerated. That even the "man" will be held accountable.

A great day.

How many years have Rogers allowed the Jays to lose? About 20.

This has nothing to do with that.

Even if you don't like Burke, if he was fired because he refused to pull the trigger on a trade then owneship has overstepped their boundaries and that is a bad sign for the future.

Brian Burke running his own show will likely be better than any "figurehead" GM that will be appointed.

This has me incredibly concerned. I fear that this may be exactly what is happening.

Honestly i'm kinda happy... at first its like wow... then i look at our goalie depth and centre depth and I understand it. He said he was going to build from the net out 4 + years ago and yet our goaltending tandem is Scrivens and Reimer... Ridiculous. I'm not against the Luongo deal. I hate his contract but every team can have a bad contract. With Komi, Lombo, Connolly etc coming of the books soon i'm not worried.

Burkes biggest miscalculation was in assuming that being by being frugal with his cap space he would ensure the teams success while others struggled under the weight of bad contracts. So much for that, the amnesty buyouts basically make his whole strategy useless, and in fact make it the least effective strategy for improving a team. Had to go because of that, you can't have the biggest market team in the biggest hockey market being afraid to sign top players.

Well now its gonna be harder getting Getzalf and Perry to the leafs

Im also hoping for Carlyle to get canned as wel and bringing up Dallas Eakins! :)

This next few days are gonna be so interesting! There goes a good start to my semester lmao

Terrible move firing burke right now!

Burke came in, overestimated the existing roster and tried to turn the team around too fast. After realizing his mistake, he has made some good deals to try and build the farm system up.
We better not get a new GM that goes back to the JFJ modus operandi of trading/signing high priced older players past there prime to limp into the playoffs. Any new gm will feel pressure from owners to come in and make unnecessary moves early. This could set us back a couple years.

If the new GM is anyone but nonis I will be pissed.
Another depressing day for leafs fans...
