the Kessel trade, keeping Wilson around for 2 years longer than he should have and then hiring a new coach which the roster doesn't fit with little wiggle room

timing is crazy and still shocked this happened but I've never been a big fan

"It makes no sense to fire a General Manager 10 days before a National Hockey League season when you could have fired him 1 month, 2 months, 3 months, 4 months, 5 months beforehand"

-- Bob McKenzie on TSN.

FWIW, both 'Brian Burke' and 'MLSE' are trending worldwide.

Just another of many examples of ownership trying to drive the ship. They've got no interest in a real brain as a GM, they simply want a puppet.

The fact that anyone including myself can still cheer for this team is just depressing.

For the people out there cheering this move...

Please realize this is like pressing the reset button.

There is absolutely no guarantees the new GM will come in and want to tank. For all we know it could be some young impressionable guy like JFJ who MLSE can "mould" which means... make him do what we want.

I'll reserve judgement until we get word on the replacement... but from the outset this looks like an awful awful move for an organization that was just starting to form an identity

And what identity might that have been? >_>

Remember the time MLSE hired a coach themselves and then let a new GM come on without bringing in his own guys?

Oh yeah me too.... that nightmare just ended a few months ago.

Well said.

I'm okay with this if it's Nonis, but I can't really think anyone else suddenly stepping in right now is a good thing just as we were turning the page.

Burke did a good job building the team, but he had to answer for the poor results and broken promises. It's really just business common sense and even the owners probably think he did well in all other aspects.

Not one guy that Burke drafted in his tenure made any sort of impact for the Leafs.

The results after 4 years on the job were very poor.

You don't reward this type of performance. The new management has observed how a franchise should be operated with the Blue Jays and they are looking to make changes so that can happen with the Leafs and Raptors.

Colangelo will soon follow, IMO.

A clear message from ownership that losing will not be tolerated. That even the "man" will be held accountable.

A great day.

Burkites are crying...I think I will celebrate by going out and getting a case of Heineken. Oh can I drive you to the airport Burkie?

Basically the only thing they're talking about on Montreal sports talk radio for the last while. No Habs at all... I suspect that's what they talk about in other hockey cities. This is an heartquake.

Rick Dudley should take over, hes the perfect guy for the job

yeah great idea lets bring in another old guy that's living in the past... Leafs need a young modern GM that knows whats going on in the game... like Alex Anthopolous for the Jays. Can Nonis be that guy? I would be comfortable with giving him a chance for now.

My theory:

Burke sold the new ownership on a stand pat (ie: do nothing all summer) strategy based on the assumption that the NHL economic system was going to be dramatically altered after the lock out. He positioned the team to be ready for this "new landscape."

In the end, the system really didn't change that much and now Burke was left with egg on his face and essentially the same roster (minus Schenn and the Monster and plus JVR) that was the fifth worst team in the league a year ago.

TRADE PHIL KESSEL - NEW GM'S FIRST MOVE.

PERMANENTLY BENCHING KOMI UNTIL HE AGREES TO WAIVE HIS NMC

WAIVING THE LIKES OF CONNOLLY/LOMBARDI

TRADING MACA - STEKEL

Finally some wheels can be churned.

+1.

We finished in the basement for years. You don't produce as a GM, you suffer the consequences. It's as simple as that.

Delayed consequences? You're going to be punished....later when doing so will not only punish you but the entire organization and put it at ridiculous disadvantage.

Awesome. Good to know.

Maybe not as doom and gloom as you suggest but leafs fans definitely deserve better.
