I would guess that Burke and the new ownership didn't see things eye to eye. But why one earth would the Leafs leave it until now?
J. Ferguson: 4 years, 4 months (-1.0 lockout year) ---- 162-123-43 - 92pt pace
Brian Burke: 4 years, 2 months (-0.5 lockout year) ---- 136-144-48 - 80pt pace
I wouldn't be surprised if this was management pushing for a luongo trade, and Burke refusing.
Great day for Leaf Nation as this has been among the darkest time in Leafs history with the poorest, longest consecutive non playoff streak in team history.
4 years into his tenure and you have a bottom 5 NHL team, would get anyone fired who promised playoff results.
When your teams MLSE execs have to humble themselves and issue public apology letters for the poor results of the team and the GMs performance reflective of that, you know the end is near.
Some very wise people said this season was "Playoffs or Burke or Bust" and that very wise prognostication couldn't have been more accurate.
For the people out there cheering this move...
Please realize this is like pressing the reset button.
There is absolutely no guarantees the new GM will come in and want to tank. For all we know it could be some young impressionable guy like JFJ who MLSE can "mould" which means... make him do what we want.
I'll reserve judgement until we get word on the replacement... but from the outset this looks like an awful awful move for an organization that was just starting to form an identity
Cya Rielly, Gards and a first
Hello mr. Luongo
Exactly. This could be bad. Could not be bad... but could be bad.
I wonder if we're entering another time of organizational in-fighting like in the mid-1990's.
A clear message from ownership that losing will not be tolerated. That even the "man" will be held accountable.
A great day.

If that was really the case, Burke would have been fired in June. Don't make up crapA clear message from ownership that losing will not be tolerated. That even the "man" will be held accountable.
