Timing of this is really strange. I just can't see it being about Luongo.
There must be disagreements all the time regaring personnel. What strikes me as being odd...sounds like he was fired. If it were a disagreement on players, more likely Burke resigns.

I would guess that Burke and the new ownership didn't see things eye to eye. But why one earth would the Leafs leave it until now?

Or that the people signing his paycheque dont care for the awful job he has done. He sucked. Everybody knows it. Only some cannot admit it. Garbage GM. LOL @ people who are now afraid of Nonis...hahahaha. Cant be any worse.

Great timing Leafs. Awesome job you joke of a franchise.
Unless there was a scandal, I absolutely do not understand the timing of this. Horrible timing........ wtf.

I actually thought about Pierre to Toronto. Rogers/Bell would have him in their pocket, hes got a good judge of talent too.... but it would just make our franchise into the Dallas Cowboys of the NHL.

Management probably wants Luongo, Burke probably didnt want Luongo's contract, so management fires Burke so Nonis can trade the farm for Luongo. Thats my speculation anyways.

J. Ferguson: 4 years, 4 months (-1.0 lockout year) ---- 162-123-43 - 92pt pace
Brian Burke: 4 years, 2 months (-0.5 lockout year) ---- 136-144-48 - 80pt pace

I wouldn't be surprised if this was management pushing for a luongo trade, and Burke refusing.

i wouldnt be suprised at all

its pretty bizzare timing
firing a gm prior to training camp could mean something pissed ownership

Great day for Leaf Nation as this has been among the darkest time in Leafs history with the poorest, longest consecutive non playoff streak in team history.

4 years into his tenure and you have a bottom 5 NHL team, would get anyone fired who promised playoff results.

When your teams MLSE execs have to humble themselves and issue public apology letters for the poor results of the team and the GMs performance reflective of that, you know the end is near.

Some very wise people said this season was "Playoffs or Burke or Bust" and that very wise prognostication couldn't have been more accurate.

Season hasn't started yet.

Be careful what you wish for.

For the people out there cheering this move...

Please realize this is like pressing the reset button.

There is absolutely no guarantees the new GM will come in and want to tank. For all we know it could be some young impressionable guy like JFJ who MLSE can "mould" which means... make him do what we want.

I'll reserve judgement until we get word on the replacement... but from the outset this looks like an awful awful move for an organization that was just starting to form an identity

100% this.

For all we know Burke wanted to trade the Farm to acquire Luongo.

Rogers said no.

Wow, this came out of nowhere.

This is disappointing, Burke's a smart man and one hell of a trade maestro. They better have a very good replacement lined up (or just hand the job to Nonis) or I'm going to be really upset.

Exactly. This could be bad. Could not be bad... but could be bad.

I wonder if we're entering another time of organizational in-fighting like in the mid-1990's.

Or simply the actual standings results matter and MLSE is tired of being embarrassed and dragged through the mud, made the laughing stock of the NHL by Burke's action taking the team to the depths of the leagues standings.

2 X bottom 5 finishes in the last 3 seasons including the last is all the evidence one needs to support a firing for those accountable for that disaster.

I had high hopes when Bell/Rogers took over that they were going to clear house soon.

yea the TIMING is ****** terrible.... why distract the team?? IM SO ****** CONFUSED...

A clear message from ownership that losing will not be tolerated. That even the "man" will be held accountable.

A great day.

+1.

We finished in the basement for years. You don't produce as a GM, you suffer the consequences. It's as simple as that.

No words for this. This ****ing organization is lost at sea.

Unless this is for a genuine tank to get a couple superstars, this is the worst move since the idea of hiring JFJ.

Yeah firing the GM who negotiated for you during the CBA right before the season is going to start is ****ing always great for your team.

As long as the next GM isn't a ****ing dumb ass, they could end up looking pretty smart because of the moves Burke made. Burke has provided the Leafs with some good young talent going forward.

I backed up and supported nearly everything Burke said, I feel very unconfident right now

OMG leafs .. worst move you could make. Why not HIRE Keenan now? You'd be sure to acquire Luongo then :)
