Waived: Brendan Smith (Update: CLEARED)

I dont expect him to get claimed, I think the Rangers would have just traded him for "Future Considerations". I am guessing this is their way of reminding Smith what its like going from the luxury NYR jet, to riding buses across the country. Then the hope would be he comes into camp next year in the best shape of his life. This also gives the Rangers a chance to see what Pionk or Gilmour can do.

About mid-season coach changes, but it`s hard to predict. Personally I did not see this Smith on waiver move - I thought they swallow it up that Smith was not prepared for a new season and moved on and looking forward. And I`ve a notion things would be differently if we somehow avoided all the injuries this season with Kreider and all that. Maybe B. Smith would still be here, but it`s unfortunate situation for the org. and him since it`s his birthday, and his wife has nothing to do with it. I know @Ola mention her. :)

This makes me very worried that the ice AV is on may be thicker than we all hope.

Brooks just wrote an article about AV and his future...he says internally there's a lot of respect for AV and the Rangers in theory would prefer not to fire him, but considering his inflexibility in systems play, his style of coaching a passive team, putting off leadership on his veteran players, and being hard on young players while giving vets a free pass, does it make sense to keep him on to coach a rebuilding team

Happy Birthday Brendan Smith - Yikes

What even happens when a contract this big is waived?

If he clears waivers they can send him down and it wills ave about $1 mill on the cap, but the rest of his contract will still count against the salary cap.

They can also keep him with the team

If he clears waivers and refuses to report to Hartford, does that terminate his contract?

So, in a nutshell, the management respect him, and Brooks sounds as incredulous as the rest of us that he still has a job?

Sigh.

Shame it takes waiving Smith to give Pionk a look. Like, Kampfer is still on the roster...

I don't look at Kampfer as the best thing since sliced bread, but c'mon. He got hit and coughed up the puck. It wasn't like Smith fumbling the puck like a hot potato almost every single time he touches it with no one within five feet.

What was the name of the defenseman we signed from Ottawa for 6 million per that we sent down for a few years. Same situation all over again. WADE REDDEN

So... 100% still the system and not the fact that Smith truly isn’t that good? There’s no way he just busted his ass for a contract once he got traded?

Brendan Smith is 1998-2004 throwback who got paid and then just didn't care.

That definitely might be the case.

I doubt it though. He looked more like a Mike Keane than your typical fat cat, a guy who went from being effective at his game to looking like he didn't know what the hell he was suppose to be doing.

It does not have to, but in this case it would.

I am really not sure they will send him down, if they want to send a stronger message they will, but I'm not sure they will risk alienating him too much given the years left on the contract.

God this guy fooled virtually 90% of the fan base with 18 regular season games and two playoff series.

Why is it so difficult for everyone to take anyone’s word that he was always pretty mediocre in Detroit and definitely not the player people expected him to be based on the small sample size in NY. What is the HF wisdom that people ALWAYS rely on to disregard small sample sizes? He 100% turned it on in his first ever big contract year and then after he got the big contract, he coasted. What’s the emotional attachment to defending this guy who hasn’t even played a full 82 games in NY yet?

True, only a handful of people really know. If I had to guess, he came to camp out of shape, which would explain why he got off to such a bad start. Who knows what went on since then? Whatever it is, he never got back to anywhere near his 2017 playoffs level.

He went to college with Stepan and McDonagh so there's got to be chemistry somewhere.

Kind of like how Vesey and Hayes have unreal chemistry because they're both Boston guys.

Speaking of Boston, Gorton assembled their cup team, FYI.
