I would expect that most GMs in the league have made a Brendan Smith-sized mistake at some point. Remember Jeff Finger?
Damn. Don't do that.

Buy him out in the summer.
What are the chances someone picks him up?
in the real world it doesn't matter if its someones birthday or notSomething happened behind closed doors.
Just can't believe the organization was unaware or so insensitive to do it on his birthday.
At that cap hit? Pretty much 0.What are the chances someone picks him up?

There's also the scenario where Smith feels like the Rangers just aren't the right place for him and the two parties can mutually terminate the contract - which is probably the Rangers dream scenario but least likely to happen unless Smith feels like the Rangers are going to keep him with the 'Pack for the next three years.
Interesting times in Ranger land.
Wade Redden?
If Smith does what Redden did and becomes a true leader for the Pack my respect for him would skyrocket.
Redden was a true professional.
This is one of the most ridiculous statement I have read all season.Reality check..
Smith isn't getting back to anything other than eating a burger.
He rode the coat tails of Skjei, who was playing all world defensively last year..
I'd want to see what he can do after AV is fired and in a different system.
This is one of the most ridiculous statement I have read all season.
People want to be upset that he didn't show up in shape this year and it showed then fine, I know I am.
But to make mindless statements like the ones above are just a waste of space. Skjei, while playing an improved game last year, was a bit lost in the pairings. Smith complimented his game extremely well. They were our best pair in the 2nd round last year and it absolutely was not just because of Skjei. Smith added a different element to the team that was severely lacking. Not surprisingly, with Smith playing so terribly this year, Skjei has again looked lost in the lineup. Bouncing around. His game has been pretty average as well.
So let's stay away from the ludicrous statements in all that is going on.
The only caveat is, were you arguing against signing him bc you were saying he'd play this badly. Or were you arguing that he wouldn't be worth it even if he continued his good play from last year? Because if it's the latter then your argumentwas very debatable and not worth crowing about here. That's what players his age, at that level get paid. Maybe a little less but it's not unreasonable. If it's the former and you just felt he was going to be garbage then you totally called itRemember when he re-signed and I said it was a **** contract and got yelled at all summer?
I mean, this is ****ing stupid, because Smith is a good enough d-man. Nobody can play for **** in this system, though.
More evidence that GM and coach are on the same page?
God I am not even going to touch this inappropriate assessment that is based on literally nothing. No facts. No stats. Nothing. One good game? Skjei carried him? L.O.L. Clueless.Speaking of mindless.
The fact that you're even defending this guy is laughable at best.
Skjei carried that pairing thoughout the playoffs and it's not even disputable.
Smith literally had ONE good week since he's been here and that was against the Canadiens.
THAT'S IT..
