Waived: Brendan Smith (Update: CLEARED)

He went to college with Stepan and McDonagh so there's got to be chemistry somewhere.

Kind of like how Vesey and Hayes have unreal chemistry because they're both Boston guys.

Speaking of Boston, Gorton assembled their cup team, FYI.

I would hardly call Vesey and Hayes “unreal chemistry”. They’re friends. They play decently together because of their familiarity. If they had unreal chemistry I have to imagine the results would be a bit better. Regardless, Stepan is gone and Smith had 6 or 7 years to stagnate, regress or pick up bad habits since he was a Badger. The fact that he once played with McD means zilch to me. He simply isn’t that good.

lmao, he didn't actually say this....did he
See below
not really. A reporter asked why he fell off a cliff, and Gorton replied something like 'Not sure why he fell off a cliff.." [paraphrased]

But he basically agreed. No denying Smith has been bad, but the GM basically confirming that means the relationship probably isn't great between them

My entire post was sarcastic.

Obviously a wake-up call..nobody is claiming him..if they did the rangers would do cartwheels.

Waive him..send him To hartford...he knows that he better be ready and better next season or he's going to for in Hartford the next 3 years.

there's 200+ players with a higher cap hit than Smith although he's got 3 years after this. not so sure it's a foregone conclusion someone doesn't claim him.

To be fair to everyone who liked Smith and was on board with his re-signing, he is having the worst year of his career statistically, so it's not like he is playing at a similar level to his previous seasons, but I would have much preferred just signing a guy like Franson rather than giving Smith his contract, said this during FA. Oh well, now we have to hope that some team claims him or he gets his shit together.

IMO he's very capable of bouncing back. Seems like he blew this offseason, which is insane for someone in his position, but seems to be the truth none the less. If he works like a lunatic for next season and we get a more sane coach I think he can be a good second pairing player again.

If he clears and goes to Hartford it counts against the cap no? Can’t believe if that’s the case we couldn’t restrain and trade for something

Under the current CBA you can bury $375k + league minimum when sending a player down to the AHL.

That means the max cap hit that can be buried is $1,025,000 (full season)

With Smith having an AAV of $4,350,000, that means the cap hit for Smith is $18,472 per day

Brendan Smith will never be an 82 game 2nd pair dman. Let’s say the truth of his play is in between what we saw in a very small sample size from a very motivated Smith at the end of last year and the Smith we see this year. If he bounces back, he will be a solid, if moderately overpaid, 3rd pairing dman who can fill in on the 2nd pair but does not belong there if you want to be successful. The good news is that we’re going through a transition, so if he has to play there to shelter a younger dman for most of next year that is fine and he is only signed until he is 32 so it’s not like we will be overpaying for a borderline 4/5 for six more years.

I would avoid posting sarcasm - life is complicated enough to understand once in a while we communicate at home or on work - just a friendly reminder, and my reason based on life experience. It`s nothing wrong to say I was wrong, or I view it differently based on a certain topic here, and it`s a public forum so hard to detect sarcasm when u can`t hear the person voice.
I`ve mention and written many things here while being an active Rangers fan since 2014 here on HF, before I active joined this community even though I follow hockey and Rangers years before that, but my brief point is: Sometimes I`ve been just wrong or totally missed on certain topics, or misunderstand the whole sentence and its meaning, and it`s easier to understand each other when u write what you think about a certain topic or an opinion.

It was too long content so a TL;DR.

- Communication is important in life so avoid sarcasm if u have the chance. :)

Now back to topic at hand, it`s a serious situation a rebuild may cause many people and fans alike upset - going through emotions in life, because sport is important especially when we follow a team so close as we do sometimes in our sparetime. And maybe it sounds I`m no longer a Rangers fan if they move Zucc. based on part of the rebuild which is understanding related to his age, but whatever happen in the summer window or before deadline with Zucc and others. I am still a Rangers fan and will follow the team though just to mention that.
I had too many great memories here the recent years so I`m loyal to Rangers as a fan.

And moving B. Smith is a start of a rebuild for sure, and I admit I did not expect this this early since he just signed that contract.

Wow, what a day.

No one is going to claim Smith - I'd be even more shocked at that than I am at the candid press conference that Gorton and Sather held (where did that come from?).

Can't say I see the strategy here other than hoping Smith gets his game/confidence back playing in a lesser league and hoping the '17 playoffs Smith is somewhere on the horizon.

It’s probably a kick in the ass like others have eluded to. Maybe the Rangers get lucky and someone claims him but if not, here’s a taste of Hartford for the rest of the season so get your ass into shape in the offseason or you’ll spend the next 3 years there type of thing.

Smith is as good as not dressing for another game this year.Being put on waivers this early is a huge sign that the FO is very unhappy with him, and I'm going to speculate that it goes beyond his on-ice performance.

Strap in, people. The next two weeks will be crazy. Today was just the start.

I would expect that most GMs in the league have made a Brendan Smith-sized mistake at some point. Remember Jeff Finger?
