Or

4) Smith will clear waivers and refuse to report to Hartford. Could be a mutual termination kind of thing. Smith always did up his game at this time of year for the stretch. I wonder if he would rather pick his location and have a shot at Stanley...

True, but I doubt he's going to leave roughly 14 mil on the table in the hopes that a contender signs him.

After the way this year has gone it's hard to see him getting $14M guaranteed or whatever we owe him after this season. So it would be an enormous risk on his part.

True. It's not the likeliest of scenarios. I just keep thinking back to the fact that he seems to thrive on the post-season. And he's now looking at spending the next 3 years in the middle of a re-build. It's possible he's the kind of guy that would walk away from money in order to give himself the best chance at a Cup. Not likely, but possible. I'm probably over-analyzing, haha.

Surprising, in a good way. All signs point to Gorton making some massive changes to the organization. Here we go.

not a huge fan of it being "in a good way" since it points to a massive screw up in evaluation and coaching to go along with all the other things the Rangers hoped would work out this season but did not.

That said...I feel like this season was always "start re-working the team and planning longer term but hope that with some tweaks and guys stepping up the team can remain competitive", so it's not a total failure that the team ended up being bad, it just re-enforces the idea that it's time to overhaul things

Smith has been horrific this year, but I see this as a sign that AV still has the GMs backing. I HOPE IM WRONG. As bad as he’s been it Alison didn’t help Smith that he actually plays tough and will drop the gloves. AV not a fan. Has to be something going on behind the scene

Brooks is a moron when he gives opinions, but he might as well be the team spokesman when he gives rumors.

One can only imagine what people think of your opinions?

We should be thankful to have someone as connected as Larry Brooks, whether you love him or hate him he's been with the team for decades and knows his shit.

Highest relCF% among the Rangers 6 regular dmen this year
Highest relCF60
3rd best relCA60
3rd best relGF%

But he's the problem. Organization is a joke.

So you have a problem with getting rid of this guy? I wish they would waive about a dozen more

Remember when he re-signed and I said it was a **** contract and got yelled at all summer?

I mean, this is ****ing stupid, because Smith is a good enough d-man. Nobody can play for **** in this system, though.

More evidence that GM and coach are on the same page?
I was in that one with you, I said I didn’t like the contract and that he was getting like $2m too much per year (and too many years) and brought up there was reports he’d take like 2x2 to stay in Detroit and have never gotten more shit on this site (to be fair I don’t take thaaat many hard stances here)

I agree with every word of this.

Crazy. Was a fan of the trade, and re-signing, even though it was an overpayment. He and Skjei looked so good in the post-season.

I really hope this doesn’t mean AV is staying.

Smith has been a dumpster fire more than anyone else on D all year, no matter left or right side or up or down in the line up. He's better than this, maybe not the playoff Smith we saw but better than this. He's not currently tradeable and he's not walking away from his deal either. Sit him, play him in Hartford if needed, get Graves, Pionk, ADA, Sproul plenty of minutes going forward and see what you got. Change up the system asap. The long offseason will be a good thing for beatup vet's, injured guys and out of shape Smith. This is a move you have to make when scratching him didn't work.
